Veterans Memorial

Letter from the General Manager

Franklin County Veterans Memorial is winding down 2010 and what an exciting year it has been!  We welcomed two new board members: Fred Harris and Jana Maniace. Mr. Harris brings to the board more than 45 years of hospitality experience.  He most recently spent 35 years as general manager of the Holiday Inn on the Lane. Ms. Maniace is a registered architect and has worked at various architectural firms in central Ohio.

This fall we hosted the annual Veterans Day Hall of Fame Ceremony, the Sports Card and Memorabilia Show, the International Gem and Jewelry Show and the Singing Buckeyes.  We also hosted Cedric the Entertainer, Chelsea Handler and America's Got Talent.

We will finish out the year with the annual First Night New Year's Eve event.  This year's event will be December 31st from 5 p.m.-10 p.m., followed by fireworks at COSI.  Buttons can be purchased in advance around the Columbus area or at Veterans Memorial beginning at 4:30 p.m. event day.

2011 is proving to be a great year for us.  In March, the Arnold Sports Classic will be celebrating its 23rd year at Veterans Memorial, and Grand Funk Railroad will kick off the year on January 15.  Please visit us on Facebook, Twitter and MySpace to keep up with all of the events happening at Franklin County Veterans Memorial.

Have a safe and happy holiday season!

Rodney Myers Sr., General Manager

Central Ohio's Largest New Year's Eve Celebration

Every year, around this time, families begin to wonder what they will do on New Years Eve.  This night celebrates the excitement of the coming of the New Year and the possibilities that a new year brings.  It is a time of new beginnings and fresh starts.  However, this night tends to leave families searching for safe and fun activities.  First Night Columbus ends that search.

First Night Columbus is a community oriented, substance-free celebration beginning at 5 p.m. December 31, 2010, in various downtown locations including Franklin County Veterans Memorial, COSI and Rhodes Tower.

First Night Columbus offers more than 150 entertainers in more than 15 downtown performance sites, and hands on activities involving the creativity and imagination of all involved.

Veterans Memorial will be the site of jugglers, caricatures, comedians, face painting, Lego'sŪ, international food court and much more.  At 10 p.m. First Night's Fireworks Extravaganza will begin right across Broad Street at COSI.

"This year's First Night Program is as large and diverse as any in its 16 year history. The expansion areas cover the educational, entertainment and artistic environments with scores of interactive, experiential opportunities for children and families of all ages.  As the precursor of the opening and closing events of the 2012 Bicentennial Celebration, the 2010 First Night provides a snap shot of what's coming in the next two to three years. From creations stations to fireworks there is something for everyone," said Mike Collins, President, Promotions One, Inc.

Instead of tickets, First Night Columbus will be selling admission buttons for $8 in advance at COSI, Giant Eagle, Fifth Third Bank or online at www.firstnightcolumbus.com and $10 at the door.

First Night is still recruiting volunteers.  If you have an interest, click here and download a copy of the volunteer application.

Franklin County Veterans Memorial Stage Traditions

A Rich History

Just like a person, a building that has lived for 55 years has a story to tell.  Franklin County Veterans Memorial tells part of its story on its walls, doors and furniture.

The rich history of our stage can be read on the walls of the projection room located at the top of our balcony.  Years' worth of signatures have been etched on the walls by men and women who have operated the spotlights throughout the years.  Signatures capture the name of the worker, the show he or she worked and the year.  Shows worked, such as Bobby Brown, George Jones, Jo Dee Messina and Rascal Flatts are forever marked on our walls.

In addition to the walls being decorated with names and dates, one door, located stage left, is quite remarkable.  It has been signed so many times one can barely see the original signings through the layers.  This door is where signatures can be found of people who have graced our stage - performers, graduates, dancers and award recipients.

The signature that is most notable is located in the most inconspicuous place: on the inside of our Baldwin piano.  When the top is lifted, two distinct, identical signatures are unveiled: Liberace.  He performed in 1962 and 1981 on the Veterans Memorial stage and left his mark on both occasions.

The history of these signatures and events has played a part in many lives in central Ohio and surrounding areas.
