Veterans Memorial

Letter from the General Manager

Franklin County Veterans Memorial has had an exciting summer!  We hosted the annual State of Ohio Bar Exam, where more than 1,000 students sat for the test.  We were also the site for a street soccer tournament and our first annual Mixed Martial Arts Competition which was attended by more than 1,200 fans and featured national fighters. In addition, Columbus Public Schools, Upper Arlington Schools, Southwestern City Schools, Columbus State Community College, Everest Institute and DeVry returned to Vets for their commencements. These are some of the ways that our venue is trying to diversify our entertainment portfolio.

As we enter into the fall, we are proud to feature headline entertainers such as Cedric the Entertainer, Chelsea Handler and America's Got Talent. Our sales team is working with national promoters and recently completed a direct mail marketing campaign to re-engage these promoters with our venue to continue to bring the best entertainment to our community.

In November, Franklin County Veterans Memorial will celebrate its 55th Anniversary.  Stay tuned for more exciting news and events surrounding this event!

Ghost Stories and Superstitions

There is a strange practice that takes place at Franklin County Veterans Memorial.  On any given day or night, if you were to enter our auditorium, one light always remains lit onstage.  This practice is not unique to our stage, but is accepted by most stages to be a rule that is never broken.

There are people who would say the light is left on for practical reasons.  Obviously a dark stage is a place where accidents could occur easily; people falling off stage into the orchestra pit, injuring themselves on props or stage equipment, etc.  Many artists think there is nothing sadder than a "dark" theatre (a theatre without a performance).  By leaving a light on, the theatre is never "dark"; it is just waiting for the next performance.  These reasons would make sense; however, if you were to ask many in the business, they would not agree.

Some of the most common thoughts on this subject are much more interesting.  One explanation for the light to continually shine on stage is the thought that if a stage is ever left dark, a ghost will take up residence.  Another similar thought is that a dark stage will allow ghosts of past performers to return to relive their glory days onstage.  Others believe that all stages have ghosts and a light must be kept lit so they can see and don't feel abandoned.  The ghosts get angry when the light is not left on and begin to play pranks and cause mishaps.  This led to the single light being named the "ghost light".

It is common for theatres that have been in business for more than a few decades to have many associated ghost stories.  Veterans Memorial is no exception.  Some employees claim to have seen the ghosts, some think they have heard them moving around, and others avoid the theatre when no one is around for fear of running into the stage ghosts.

So, is it simple superstition or does Veterans Memorial truly have its own ghost story?

Stories From Our Readers
In Response to Our Newsletter

The Columbus AIDS Task Force has held multiple holiday dinners at Veterans Memorial.  We have anywhere from 125-250 clients and their family members in attendance at these holiday dinners.  The staff from Vets have always been respectful of our clients, some of whom need extra assistance in getting around.  Often this event is their only holiday celebration.  Vets is a wonderful space in that it's easily accessible for those with physical limitations; it's clean; it's on the bus line; it's centrally located; and it has plenty of parking.

Everyone from the parking attendant to the sound person to the catering staff to the administrative staff have been helpful and kind throughout the process.  Their actions are consistent even when we were disorganized or late in our tasks.

The Columbus AIDS Task Force family truly thanks the Veterans Memorial family for years of great service.
