Veterans Memorial

Letter from the General Manager

Franklin County Veterans Memorial has been busy with many different types of events.  We had a strong second quarter and are pleased to continue hosting clients such as Kids Artistic Revue, Dollenmayer Dance and the International Gem and Jewelry Show.  We also hosted fifteen graduation ceremonies with over 2,000 graduating students.

Just as exciting are the new events added to our calendar: Women's Living Expo, Baby Bonanza, and the Hot Tub & Spa Show; as well as hosting a portion of the Juneteenth Festival.

We are proud to be the site of the launch pad for the annual Red, White and BOOM! celebration.  If you are looking for the most convenient place to park and have an up-close encounter with Red, White and BOOM!, Veterans Memorial is the place.  Don't miss the opportunity to attend the 30th year of Red, White and BOOM! with Veterans Memorial staff and friends.

Our sales team is working diligently to bring more business to Veterans Memorial.  We have confirmed two concerts and a comedy show, a mixed martial arts event and a street soccer tournament.  Our board of directors, along with our sales team and myself are working hard to reposition Veterans Memorial within the community; and the hard work from our dedicated staff is leading to new opportunities.

Veterans Memorial: A Way of Life

This year, Veterans Memorial will celebrate its 55th Anniversary.  Dedicated on Veterans Day in 1955, this building began as the center of activity in Columbus.  Over the years, the staff has had the unique experience of watching Veterans Memorial change and adapt to the growing and evolving city of Columbus.  The success of Veterans Memorial could be credited to the many supporters, energy and momentum of the city and the many diverse events that take place year after year.  However, the pulse and character of Veterans Memorial is in its employees.

Veterans Memorial is fortunate to have a small, but devoted staff.  Thirty-five percent of the staff has worked at Veterans Memorial for more than 20 years and one staff member has worked here more than 30.  These employees are the history books of Veterans Memorial and pass on stories that their predecessors passed on to them.  When talking about Veterans Memorial, they smile and seem proud of the contribution they have made to the Veterans Memorial legacy.

When asked why they love working at Veterans Memorial, no two answers were the same.  "I love the challenges that come with working on an older facility.  No two days are ever the same at Vets," said one engineer.  "I love meeting all the people that come in and out of these doors," said another engineer.  "I love being part of the rich history that Vets contributes to the community.  It seems like everyone has had an experience at Veterans Memorial," said a member of the sales team.  "I love that this office is not a typical boring office where nothing changes and each day is the same.  I have made good relationships with clients over the years," said an administrative assistant.

There were many responses to the question "why do you love working at Veterans Memorial," but one in particular stood out.  Larry Cook, Housekeeping Superintendant, has worked at Veterans Memorial for thirty-three years.  "There has always been a 'Cook' working at Veterans Memorial since the day the doors opened," said Cook.  Willie Cook, father of Larry Cook, worked for Veterans Memorial and passed on the tradition to Larry.  Since then, uncles and cousins have continued the tradition.  Currently, Larry's nephew is carrying on the torch in the same department here at Veterans Memorial.

When you walk through the doors at Veterans Memorial, you can see the pride reflected in the perfectly polished floors.  Working at Veterans Memorial is not just a job; it is a way of life.
