| Letter from the General Manager |
Welcome to the first issue of our new quarterly newsletter. We are hoping to share with you the great things that are happening at Franklin County Veterans Memorial! With all the positive changes, it is hard to pick what to highlight, as we are having such an outstanding year filled with accomplishments and positive feedback from both our clients and attendees. As we go into future issues, we will keep you abreast of our facility changes, associates and new events taking place at the great facility you know as Vets! Year to date, we have introduced both paper and cardboard recycling programs, implemented a new position of Marketing Manager, increased our sales efforts and visibility, and also began renovating meeting areas and theater dressing rooms. We will also be painting our North Exhibition Hall before the end of the year. We feel such pride in hosting Red, White and Boom on our property, presenting the Musicians of the Columbus Symphony, being the first location for the Federal Court to have offsite naturalization of US citizens and to be the newest Early Voting and Absentee location for our community. These are just a few of the great new events that we have presented this year. Stay tuned, it only gets better!

The Musicians of the Columbus Symphony
Uplifting Concerts in Down Times
The musicians of the symphony remained committed to Columbus by holding their Light Classics Concert Series at Veterans Memorial after the Columbus Symphony Orchestra cancelled its Picnic with the Pops summer concerts. The concert series began on Saturday, July 12 and continued on July 26 and August 2. The Musicians started off the mini concert series on July 12, with an emotional tribute to the Lima Company, where the four available members of the Lima Company were presented a plaque in recognition of their service. The musicians followed this by playing music in their honor. Alessandro Siciliano conducted the following concert, "Viva Siciliano", on July 26. The Musicians of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra conducted by Junichi Hirokami, along with special guest artists The Ohio State University Marching Band directed by Dr. Jon Woods performed the final concert in the series on August 2 to an almost packed house. Alumni of The Ohio State University Marching Band participated in an extremely successful tailgate prior to the performance in the Veterans Memorial parking lot. In typical tailgate fashion, Veterans Memorial grilled out and sold the normal fare of hotdogs, burgers, corn on the cob and more. Following each of the concerts was a reception where fans could mingle with the conductors and musicians while sipping on wine sold by the glass and nibbling on chocolate covered strawberries and decadent cheese plates. The concerts were a success and the vibe during the concerts was one of enthusiasm, optimism and hope that the symphony would not be lost.

| Recycling at Veterans Memorial
First Step in Going Green |
We are excited to announce that we have taken the first step towards going green. We have recently developed a recycling program beginning with cardboard recycling. Many of the events held at Vets use a great deal of cardboard and thanks to our new recycling program, it is now disposed of in a more resourceful manner. In April, we sent a letter to our clients describing our new system and asking for their assistance. We explained to them that there are now two compactors located in the back of our building. The red compactor is for cardboard only, and the blue compactor is for trash. All cardboard should be separated from other trash and placed in the red compactor. So far, our staff and clients have embraced the program and have helped us with our first step to a fully developed recycling program. We want to thank everyone for helping us take the first step towards going green! |
Take a Walk Down Memory Lane
Veterans Memorial Performance History
|
In a time when "Lady and the Tramp" was the highest grossing movie, coonskin caps, hoola hoops and 3-D movies were the cool fads, and gas only cost $ .23 a gallon, Franklin County Veterans Memorial opened it's doors.
Since being dedicated on Veterans Day in 1955, this building has hosted such acts as Elvis Presley, The Who and Britney Spears. Millions of fans have visited to watch their favorite stars. We have compiled a list of the acts that have performed here over the years and placed it on our website for your enjoyment. We hope you take the time to look at all of the historical acts we have had on our stage. Click here to visit. |
