1986 - 2011:  Project PAVE Celebrates 25th Anniversary

Project PAVE was established in 1986 in conjunction with a tragic incident in which a well-known attorney, representing a woman in a domestic violence case, was shot and paralyzed by her client's estranged husband.

25 logoUnderstanding that children exposed to violence often become victims or perpetrators later in life, programs were tailored to meet the unique needs of children and youth who are victims and/or witnesses of domestic violence, physical or sexual assault, child abuse, and teen dating violence.

"For the past 25 years, Project PAVE has greatly contributed to the Denver Metro community by providing services to several thousand  children, teens, youth and their families who have been impacted by relationship violence," said Michael Johnson, PAVE executive director.  "These people in turn have been part of ending the cycle of relationship violence in their lives as well as the larger community."

Stephanie Lopez: Outstanding Youth Advocate

Seven individuals and organizations from Fort Collins to Durango were recognized in December for their exemplary leadership in making Colorado a place where equality is valued. The Gay & Lesbian Fund for Colorado's annual Advancing Equality Awards honor leaders and powerful voices in communities across the state-people who stand when others cower, speak out when others are silent, and help inform, educate and generate thought-provoking conversations around equality and inclusion, for all people.

Outstanding Youth Advocate for Excellence: Stephanie Lopez, graduate of East High School and student at the University of Denver.

Steph Lopez2
Stephanie Lopez's passion for preventing dating violence sparked when she took part in a healthy relationship course as a sophomore at East High School. Within months, Stephanie organized and launched Angels Against Abuse, one of East High's largest and most diverse clubs. The club's members transcend the divisions often present in high school, focusing on inclusion of all students regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, ethnicity, socio-economic status, or religious beliefs. Stephanie is currently creating a pilot program at University of Denver to engage young Latino men in the movement to end the cycle of relationship violence.

Congratulations, Stephanie!

Save the Date - 2011 Transformations Scholarship Luncheon

Tuesday, May 3, 2011
11:30am - 1pm
Seawell Grand Ballroom, Denver Center for the Performing Arts

Relationship violence is an epidemic facing our youth today. Project PAVE's 15th annual Transformations Scholarship recognizes personal transformation, and honors youth in our community. We want to pay tribute to youth who have made, or are making, positive contributions toward ending the cycle of relationship violence by raising awareness and empowering themselves and others in their schools and community. Through this process, we hope to empower more youth to take a stand against relationship violence, and encourage youth to continue their activist work in post-secondary education and beyond.

Throughout the year, scholarship funding is raised from individual and corporate donations. In 2010, eleven very special young men and women were awarded $3,500 scholarships for post-secondary educational expenses.

Are You an Athlete?  Compete for Project PAVE!

Sweat Equity

Project PAVE is excited about a new partnership we've entered into for 2011, and hope you will be too. We're working with an innovative local foundation called Sweat Equity, which empowers athletes to raise funds for local children's nonprofits by participating in the athletic events they love.

Project PAVE has been chosen as one of the team's seven nonprofit partners for the 2011 season, and we'd love for you and your friends to join the team to raise funds for Project PAVE.

The concept is pretty simple:

  • You choose one athletic event in which to participate in 2011 (events include the Triple Bypass, Denver Marathon, Boulder Peak Tri, Bailey Hundo and more). You can also use Sweat Equity as a fundraising vehicle for any other event of your choice

  • Sweat Equity helps you prepare for your chosen event by providing: Training including professional plans, activities, clinics and teammates to train with; Pro Deals from companies like Honey Stinger, Pearl Izumi, Runners Roost, etc.; Team Clothing including jerseys, tech tees, visors, jackets and more

To become a member, just fill out an application (link below) and choose:

  • A fundraising level of $650, $1,250 or $2,500
  • The nonprofit for which you'd like to raise funds
  • Your athletic event

To help you reach your fundraising goal through individual donations and/or corporate sponsors, you'll get your own webpage on the Sweat Equity site, a sponsorship packet, and tips and support throughout the season.
