Pop Culture Video Brings Light to Relationship Violence
contributed by Eneri Rodriguez, Violence Prevention Educator
It's no secret to those of us that follow mainstream popular culture that both Rihanna and Eminem have been involved in long term abusive relationships in their pasts. As pop music icons, their stories have been eye opening for some and controversial for others. Although on opposite sides of the spectrum, they both survived the cycle of relationship abuse, and have come together for the first time to collaborate on a song that chronicles the cycle of violence.
The average cycle of abuse occurs 4 or 5 times before the victim considers leaving. As it continues, it generally speeds up while becoming more and more violent. "Love the Way You Lie," by Eminem featuring Rihanna is a song that is both realistic and framed in accessible language, building a framework for thought provoking dialog in the class room and over all, making it a hot topic among youth right now. Prof. Shawn Worthy specializes in family counseling at Metropolitan State College of Denver. He said very often parents don't sit down with their children and have a conversation on a daily basis about what's happening in school.
