Teen Pregnancy Linked to Dating Violence

Leyla W. couldn't figure out where her birth control pills kept going. One day a few tablets would be missing; the next, the whole container. Her then-boyfriend shrugged and said he hadn't seen them. She believed him - until she found them in his drawer. When she confronted him, he hit her. "That was his way of shutting me up," says Leyla, who is in her mid-20s and living in Northern California.
(For her safety, Leyla wishes to withhold her last name and hometown.)
Teen Pregnancy
He also raped her and, most days, left her locked in a bedroom with a bit of food and water while he went to work. (A roommate took pity and let her out until he came home.) Thanks to the missed pills, she got pregnant twice, the second time deciding against abortion. Click here to read more of Leyla's story on npr.org.

Recent studies also document this form of abuse where men use coercion and birth control sabotage to cause their partners to become pregnant against their wills. The study, published in the January issue of Contraception, finds this kind of reproductive control to be especially common in relationships in which women experience physical or sexual partner violence.

Project PAVE Clinic Now Accepting Spanish Speaking Clients

Project PAVE's clinical counseling program has expanded capacity to work with mono and bilingual Spanish speakers with the addition of a new Child and Family Therapist.

Antoinette Gomez holds an MSW from the University of Denver School of Social Work and an MA from Clark Atlanta University. She has ten years of work experience as a Functional Family Therapist, Home-Based Family Therapist, HIV Case Manager and Mental Health Specialist in a drug/alcohol facility.

Antoinette has worked extensively with Latino and migrant families over her career, and has worked with Project PAVE in the past as a contract therapist and graduate intern.

"I'm excited to be back at Project PAVE, providing therapeutic services to survivors of domestic violence, including the Spanish speaking population and their specific needs," said Antoinette.

"What we know is the Latino community needs these services but often are their needs are unmet.  While we have a small clinic, we are now able to offer services to some of these families."

Welcome, Antoinette!

PAVE Welcomes New Violence Prevention Coordinator

MammothLisa Xiong joins the Project PAVE family as the new Violence Prevention Coordinator this month.

Lisa brings an educational  background in Ethnic Studies and Psychology, experience in sexual violence prevention and women's self-defense, and ongoing engagement with community social change groups.  Sit down for a cup of tea or coffee with Lisa and it will become apparent her passion for youth empowerment, working with marginalized communities, and anti-oppression.

"I believe a more peaceful and healthy community intolerant of violence grows directly from the vision, energy, talents, and passion of youth," said Lisa.  "I am excited to connect, learn, and grow with youth and PAVE partners in doing this work."

Welcome, Lisa!
