End Bullying - Project PAVE in the Schools
15-year-old Phoebe Prince hung herself in
Massachusetts a few months ago, following what
investigators said was three months of harassment and bullying by fellow
students. Charges have been filed against six students in connection
with Prince's suicide. The charges range from criminal harassment to
stalking to statutory rape.
Project
PAVE works in schools to prevent tragedies like this. From 2005 - 2008, Project PAVE was an integral part of the Colorado Trust's Bullying
Prevention Initiative (BPI).
As part of this coordinated statewide effort, Project PAVE staff helped
two partner schools customize and implement the Olweus Bullying Prevention program in
all aspects of each school.
Marcus, a
student at Columbine Elementary, was both a giver and a receiver of bullying behavior. Marcus was very excited by
mathematics and protective of his younger cousin, both attributes which
elicited bullying by other students. Marcus' response was usually to "pummel them" and "take matters into my
own hands" in defense of his cousin and in response to the teasing about his
academic success.
A Project PAVE school-based counselor worked
with Marcus on strategies to control the natural anger that came with being
bullied, how to channel that energy into positive outcomes. Interventions with Marcus' teacher allowed
her to develop creative solutions for group work that allowed him to shine
while encouraging other students in math. A collaborative effort helped Marcus
become a happier student, confident in his abilities to control his behavior.
