Project PAVE Named "Small Nonprofit of the Year!"

The Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce honored Project PAVE as "Small Nonprofit Organization of the Year" at the annual Business Awards Luncheon on April 28. The awards salute small, emerging, non-profit and minority-owned businesses that have made outstanding contributions to the Denver metro community.

Since the first Small Business of the Year was recognized in 1982, four additional awards have been created to honor the success of Denver small business in front of a sell-out crowd of more than 500 business leaders.

"This award speaks to the hard work and dedication of our staff, board, volunteers, and supporters," said Mike Johnson, executive director. "It also honors the community and clients we serve.  This tells us we are doing something right."

Angels Against Abuse Raise Awareness of Teen Dating Violence

AAA Block Party
Angels Against Abuse (AAA) is a student club at East High School that formed out of a collaboration between Project PAVE and concerned teens.  AAA's mission is to raise awareness about teen dating violence and educate their peers about healthy relationships. On April 30th, the club sponsored their 2nd annual Block Party, featuring a BBQ, carnival games, obstacle course, DJ, dance off, face painting and more. All the games included messages about healthy dating relationships.

The event was held in honor of Amber Cremeens, who was killed by her ex-boyfriend on February 17th, 2009 in Wheat Ridge.

"I want people to learn from our block party that teen dating violence is real and it could happen to someone you know. Our club AAA is raising awareness about teen dating violence, how to prevent it and what is a healthy relationship. We also want to show people that this club is here to stay."

Eleven Young Women Honored with Scholarships

AAA Block Party

For the past thirteen years, The Janus Foundation & Project PAVE have partnered to award scholarships to graduating seniors who have risen above violence and abuse to pursue their dreams of a college education. This year we awarded eleven very special young women scholarships at the 13th annual luncheon fundraiser held May 7. Ten of the recipients are pictured here.

Project PAVE also received a graduation announcement this year from Carolyn Cole, a 2005 scholarship recipient graduating from Emory University.  Carolyn wrote, "Thank you very much for giving me the resources to make my dreams of higher education come true.  It would not have been possible without your assistance! Thank you also for giving me an opportunity to tell my story - it was the first step in my healing process."

A heartfelt thank you to all our sponsors and attendees!

We Salute our 2009 Graduates!

Thanks to support from the City of Denver's Safe City Program, two East High School seniors have been working part-time after school at Project PAVE.  Jose Castaneda and Stephanie Lopez provide administrative support, and welcome children and families that attend counseling in the afternoons and evenings.

Jose says, "The Safe City Program gives students like me a hope of making change in our communities.  When I see the kid's faces light up, I know that this is what I want to do with my life.  I do not consider PAVE a job, I consider it a place where I get to help young kids."

Congratulations to both Jose and Stephanie on their graduation from East High School, and the impact they have made on our community.
Project PAVE's mission is to empower youth to end the cycle of relationship violence.
