Turlock Finds Its Niche The Situation The town of Turlock rests in the agriculturally rich Central Valley of California, between the Sierra Nevada Mountains and San Francisco Bay region. Originally an agricultural center, Turlock's population has increased dramatically over the last 20 years to approximately 70,000, primarily due to the influx of suburban residents coming from the Bay area, attracted by lower property costs. As the town has grown, the original base retail stores have gradually moved from downtown and into malls and retail strips along highway and high traffic corridors creating a gradual decline downtown.
Wanting to revitalize downtown and attract visitors from among the 6.2 million people who live with 75 miles, Turlock city leaders and downtown property owners retained Destination Development (DDI) to help them create a special theme or brand that would set them apart from the many other towns in the Central Valley, and give them a focus for their revitalization efforts.
