GIRLS MAP OUT COMMUNITY
Community Bridges at IMPACT
IMPACT hosted students in the Community Bridges Community Crusaders summer program at our new office the last two weeks. More than thirty elementary and middle school-aged girls participated in a community mapping workshop to learn about community and the Neighbors Campaign. We discussed the idea of community. What are the parts of a community? What does it feel like to a member of a community? How does a community work? The girls came up with: feeling at home, having common goals, caring for each other, sharing space, having fun, working, and going to school together, and having respect for each other.

The girls split up into groups and drew maps of their community. Each map was totally different. Some of the maps had roads. Some had schools. Some had stores. Each of the maps traced out the places the students thought were most important in their community.

LOCAL POLITICS

Editor note:  IMPACT seeks to encourage residents of all backgrounds to get involved in civic life and to come together across our lines of difference. One major area of civic life is the process of electing, supporting and holding accountable our elected officials.  Because of our bridge building mission, we do not endorse or support particular candidates or elected officials. As a nonprofit, we are not allowed to do so. We are working to find a way to expose our network of engaged residents to local politics that feels and appears fair and inclusive.
