Tuesdays Together in Wheaton

Tuesdays Together

This month, the Neighbors Campaign began hosting a weekly community meet-up in Wheaton called Tuesdays Together. Thanks to our partners at Catholic Charities, we are able to meet at the Neighborhood Service Center. With the support of our new Neighbor Corps graduates, every Tuesday night we share dinner, meet new friends and introduce them to the Campaign. More importantly, we take time to share information about community events and problem-solve together.

Here are just a few examples of how Wheaton residents and community partners have made important connections and shared critical information by participating in Tuesdays Together:

  • Miguel recounted his experience visiting Montgomery Works and even got Doris who works at the front desk there to come and give us the details about the services they provide for job seekers.
  • After explaining her family's difficult child care situation, Edic conferred with Rosa (one of our Community Connectors) who made an appointment to meet with her the next day to discuss the County's child care subsidy program.
  • Alpha received the encouragement of his neighbors to continue studying for his GED.
  • Margarita, who has been looking for a job as a cashier, shared with the group that Panera in Silver Spring is hiring for the night shift - a position she could not take.
  • In response to a question about becoming a citizen, Jenny from Catholic Charities jumped in to describe the low-cost legal services their organization provides.

Neighbor Corps Graduation
Our Vision for Wheaton

Saturday, January 9th marked the completion of the first leg of the Wheaton Neighbor Corps.  Neighbor Corps is a four month leadership development program that brings residents and service providers together to explore their vision of the Wheaton community.  Through the program, participants built personal relationships, engaged in door knocking and a Neighbors Exchange, and took part in other activities.  Participants will continue to be involved in Tuesdays Together and the Neighbors Campaign.  We cannot wait to see what amazing changes they will make in the Wheaton community!

The Spirit of the Network - Celebrating the life of Martin Luther King, Jr.
MLK Service Day

IMPACT network members celebrated the life of Martin Luther King Jr. by participating in the weekend long food drive that was organized by Montgomery County at participating Giants in Long Branch and Wheaton.  Thanks to Elizabeth McMeekin who helped organize volunteers from our network, our friends from the Latino Economic Development Corporation and students and residents from all over Silver Spring, the food drive was a huge success.  Over 100 network members engaged shoppers at the Long Branch and Wheaton sites, to collect over 2,000 pounds of food - the most food collected over the weekend long food drive!  There was a palpable feeling of neighbors supporting neighbors, as network members encouraged shoppers to help feed the hungry in our county and welcomed contributions with fun and spirit.

IMPACT Silver Spring brings diverse people together to create a successful community for everyone. We engage new voices, develop leaders and spark collaboration to bring about positive change.  Our mission is to create the capacity needed to build and sustain a thriving, multicultural Silver Spring.
