This past Wednesday night over 40 neighbors and community partners came together at the Wheaton Library for the first Network Orientation. We have been having these types of events in Silver Spring for eleven months, but this was the first time we had one in Wheaton and we had no idea what to expect!

Premise of the play: The end of the 19th century is at hand.  Pierrot is on his way to Paris where he intends to make the very first recorded sound. En route he meets Augustine, the would-be Hot Air Balloonist. Accompanied by an eccentric one-person Band they encounter comic misadventures at the Circus, the Paris Metro, the Eiffel Tower, and the Moulin Rouge. MAKE A CHILD HAPPY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
Neighborhood IMPACT graduate Kerrin Torres is asking the IMPACT network to consider donating holiday gifts to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington's Silver Spring Branch located at 1300 Forest Glen Road. The Club is in desperate need of holiday gifts for 85 members, ages 5 - 16 with a focus on members 9 years old and older. Please consider making a donation to share the joy of this holiday season with these young people. Donations can be dropped off at the Club between 11:30 am - 7:30 pm this week to Cara Cupolo, Program Director. She can be reached at 301-593-4600. HEROES ON STAMPS AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM MENTOR

Interages is looking for volunteers to work with 2-4 middle school students each, to select and research a hero from the Smithsonian Postal Museum's on-line stamp collection. Each small group creates a project (skit, poster, video, other) designed to share their learning at a culminating event at the museum in the spring. Training, materials, on-site support provided. LATINO PARENT LEADERS ACTION GROUP MEETING

PARTICIPATION IN HOLIDAY GIVING PROJECT

Individuals, families, companies and civic and faith groups in Montgomery County that want to help make the Thanksgiving and December holidays brighter for local residents in need are invited to participate in this year's Montgomery County Holiday Giving Project through donations of food, gift cards, gifts for children and/or cash.  Service opportunities include organizing a food, gift card or toy collection drive; sponsoring a family or families in a specific neighborhood/zip code; and volunteering at Holiday Giving Project distribution sites. OPERATING BUDGET FORUMS WITH THE COUNTY EXECUTIVE

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will sponsor five budget forums in January to seek input from residents about the significant challenges facing the County in the upcoming Fiscal Year 2011 Operating Budget.  These sessions are hosted by the Regional Services Center Directors and the Regional Center citizen Advisory Boards and are open to residents from any part of the County.  For more information on other county wide RSC Budget Forums click here.

LITERACY TUTORS NEEDED

The Literacy Council of Montgomery County will hold an information session for volunteers interested in helping adults learn to read, write, or speak English. A session is also scheduled at the Rockville Library on Tuesday, January 26. Once volunteers have completed the orientation, they can select a two-part training session that fits their schedules. No foreign language skills are necessary. HELP A CHILD LEARN TO READ
Three local organizations including the George B. Thomas Learning Academy, Interages, and Passion for Learning are recruiting volunteers to tutor children in reading at more than 60 Montgomery County Public Schools through the "Ruth Rales Comcast Kids Reading Network."  Training and ongoing support plus all tutoring materials and books are provided at each school.  Middle and high school students can earn up to 30 service learning hours by volunteering.  Local elementary schools in need of tutors include Woodlin, Sligo Creek Oak volunteer, Montgomery Knolls, East Silver Spring and Rosemary Hills.  To find out how to volunteer email Peggy Graham or call 301-279-3890.  For more information visit the reading network website.

SILVER SPRING ADVISORY BOARD SEEKING APPLICANTS
County Executive Isiah Leggett is seeking applicants to fill seven vacancies on the Silver Spring Citizens Advisory Board.The Board is composed of 18 residents and/or business persons of communities in the Silver Spring/Takoma Park area. Applicants must work or reside within the Silver Spring Regional Center's service boundaries. The boundaries include: 495 south of the Beltway (exception: all Four Corners neighborhoods north of the Beltway are included); Rock Creek park to the west; the District of Columbia line to the south; and the Prince George's County line to the east. Homeowners and apartment dwellers are invited to apply in order to establish a balanced representation. For more information click here.
