This past Wednesday night over 40 neighbors and community partners
came together at the Wheaton Library for the first Network Orientation.
We have been having these types of events in Silver Spring for eleven
months, but this was the first time we had one in Wheaton and we had no
idea what to expect!

Road. The Club is in desperate need of holiday gifts
for 85 members, ages 5 - 16 with a focus on members 9 years old and older. Please consider making

HEROES ON STAMPS AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM MENTOR
Interages 3950 Ferrara Drive, 2nd Floor, Wheaton, MD 20906 Interages is looking for volunteers to work with 2-4
middle school students each, to select and research a hero from the Smithsonian
Postal Museum's on-line stamp collection. Each small group creates a project
(skit, poster, video, other) designed to share their learning at a culminating
event at the museum in the spring. Training, materials, on-site support
provided. Six-week commitment per program session. Days and schools varied -

holidays brighter for local residents in need are invited to
participate in this year's Montgomery County Holiday Giving Project
through donations of food, gift cards, gifts for children and/or cash. Service opportunities include organizing a food, gift card or toy
collection drive; sponsoring a family or families in a specific
neighborhood/zip code; and volunteering at Holiday Giving Project

BUDGET FORUMS WITH THE COUNTY EXECUTIVE Thursday, January
21, 2009, 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM Silver Spring Regional Service Center (tentatively at Long Branch Recreation

Leggett will sponsor five budget forums in January to seek input from residents
about the significant challenges facing the County in the upcoming Fiscal Year
2011 Operating Budget. These sessions are hosted by the Regional Services
Center Directors and the Regional Center citizen Advisory Boards and are open to

LITERACY TUTORS NEEDED Wednesday, January 6, 2010, 7:30 PM Rockville Library, 21 Maryland Ave., Rockville, MD The Literacy Council of
Montgomery County will hold an information session for volunteers interested in
helping adults learn to read, write, or speak English. A session is also scheduled at the Rockville Library on
Tuesday, January 26. Once volunteers have completed the
orientation, they can select a two-part training session that fits their
schedules. No foreign language skills are necessary. Tutors work one-on-one or
with small groups, and typically meet with students in libraries or community

HELP A CHILD LEARN TO READThree local organizations including the George B. Thomas Learning Academy, Interages, and Passion for Learning are recruiting volunteers to tutor children in reading at more than 60 Montgomery County Public Schools through the "Ruth Rales Comcast Kids Reading Network." Training and ongoing support plus all tutoring materials and books are provided at each school. Middle and high school students can earn up to 30 service learning hours by volunteering. seeking applicants to fill seven vacancies on the Silver Spring Citizens
Advisory Board.The Board is composed of 18
residents and/or business persons of communities in the Silver Spring/Takoma
Park area. Applicants must work or reside within the Silver Spring Regional Center's service boundaries. The
boundaries include: 495 south of the Beltway (exception: all Four Corners
neighborhoods north of the Beltway are included); Rock Creek park to the west;
the District of Columbia line to the south; and
