In November, join us for a screening of MY MOTHER'S JOURNEY and a conversation with director Sam Hampton. My Mother's Journey is a film about the power of the individual and the courage it takes to make societal change. Elizabeth Hampton was an African American woman who influenced social progress in upstate New York during the civil rights era. Interages is looking for volunteers to work with 2-4 middle school students each, to select and research a hero from the Smithsonian Postal Museum's on-line stamp collection. Each small group creates a project (skit, poster, video, other) designed to share their learning at a culminating event at the museum in the spring. Training, materials, on-site support provided. CERT TEAM OPPORTUNITIES

Montgomery County CERT, Division of Volunteer Services- MCFRS is looking for volunteers to join the CERT team.  CERT volunteers are trained to help family and neighbors in the event of a disaster in basic skills to help until emergency responders arrive.  CERT teams give immediate assistance to victims, provide damage assessment information, shelter support, crowd control and evacuation, light search and rescue and provide neighborhood ready programs.  All volunteers will be trained in basic first aid and CPR instruction as well as in fire safety and small fire suppression.  Current CERT Team opportunities include: Ham Radio Instruction, METRO rescue training (Courtesy of WMATA) and Teaching kids fire safety.  For more details about the class click here, or register via email.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED- FORECLOSURE WORKSHOP
Saturday, November 14, 2009, 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM
Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development is seeking to recruit volunteers for a variety of tasks throughout the day for the Foreclosure Workshop in Silver Spring.  With an anticipated count of 500+ families, volunteers will be a critical component in the event's success.  Volunteers can opt to work the entire event (9:00 - 4:30), or half day shifts (9:00 - 12:00 or 12:00 - 4:30).  Assignments will vary and can range from helping at registration to escorting homeowners to their services.  As a gesture of appreciation, a continental breakfast and lunch will be available to all volunteers. VOLUNTEERS NEEEDED - THANKSGIVING PARADE
Saturday, November 21, 2009, 7:30 AM - 1:30 PM

About 50 volunteers are needed from 7:30am to 1:30pm for the Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade, to act as balloon handlers, leading the giant Macy-like Thanksgiving balloons, and dressing up in costumes to be on the floats.  Assistance is also needed with set-up and break-down. This opportunity is great for Groups!  Volunteers must be present the whole time.  For more information contact Elizabeth Gallauresi at 301-793-2928. 

Amnesty International Human Rights Art Festival

Amnesty International is planning to host its first Human Rights Art Festival in Silver Spring, next April.  Partnering organizations and artists are invited to join in marching at the Thanksgiving Parade. You can bring your choice of visual aids and stimulants that you might like, to advertise your own group. HELP A CHILD LEARN TO READ
Three local organizations including the George B. Thomas Learning Academy, Interages, and Passion for Learning are recruiting volunteers to tutor children in reading at more than 60 Montgomery County Public Schools through the "Ruth Rales Comcast Kids Reading Network."  Training and ongoing support plus all tutoring materials and books are provided at each school.  Middle and high school students can earn up to 30 service learning hours by volunteering.  Local elementary schools in need of tutors include Woodlin, Sligo Creek Oak volunteer, Montgomery Knolls, East Silver Spring and Rosemary Hills.  To find out how to volunteer email Peggy Graham or call 301-279-3890.  For more information visit the reading network website.

TRAINING: PEACEMAKER'S CIRCLE IN SCHOOLS
Conflict Resolution Center of Montgomery County (CRCMC)

CRCMC is trying to increase the number of Peacemaking Circles in MCPS schools.  The idea is to provide a space where middle school and high school students can discuss openly, in a respectful setting, about conflict that is occurring in their school/communities. We have the opportunity to have an expert in the field of peacemaking circles (Kay Pranis) do a training for us in November and she will be training new "Keepers". In exchange for the training, we are asking people to commit to observing one or two sessions and then acting as a co-facilitator/keeper for one group of 4-6 sessions at one school for about one hour each week.  All sessions take place during or just after the school day, so availability during those times is important.  Light breakfast and lunch is included.
