Piney Branch Action Team Retreats at Smith Center

Piney Branch Retreat
The Piney Branch Action Team is made up of diverse parents, teachers and administrators from Takoma Park's Piney Branch Elementary School.  Team members have come together to embark on a nine-month journey of self-discovery, team building, cultural awareness, visioning, and acting.  The program kicked off on September 25th with an overnight retreat at the Smith Center in Rockville, Maryland.

IMPACT AT SECOND WORLD OF MONTGOMERY FESTIVAL

Downtown Wheaton (Price Avenue & Elkin Street, 1 block from the Wheaton Metro station)
IMPACT Silver Spring will host a booth at the World of Montgomery Festival.  Booth will feature information on IMPACT's Neighbors Campaign and upcoming activities in the Wheaton area.  This festival celebrates, explores and shares the diverse cultural heritages which play an active role in the lives of Montgomery County residents and communities. It will feature music and dance performances by county-based artists, food and craft vendors and a hands-on cultural education area. For more information, visit the festival website.

Synergy in Action is a Playback Theatre company based in Washington, DC under the direction of Kimberly Rattley.  Playback Theatre is an interactive theatre technique which originated 30 years ago and now has a worldwide presence.  During a playback performance, an audience member tells the story from their personal experience, and then chooses to cast members to play the significant characters.  In "playing back" the story this way, an individual's story becomes the collective's story.  We are able to see and hear another's story with open hearts and open minds.

CERT TEAM OPPORTUNITIES

Montgomery County CERT, Division of Volunteer Services- MCFRS is looking for volunteers to join the CERT team.  CERT volunteers are trained to help family and neighbors in the event of a disaster in basic skills to help until emergency responders arrive.  CERT teams give immediate assistance to victims, provide damage assessment information, shelter support, crowd control and evacuation, light search and rescue and provide neighborhood ready programs.  All volunteers will be trained in basic first aid and CPR instruction as well as in fire safety and small fire suppression.  These are the current CERT Team opportunities: Ham Radio Instruction, METRO rescue training (Courtesy of WMATA) and Teaching kids fire safety.  For more details about the class click here, or register via email.
 
AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS ARTS FESTIVAL
April 23-25, 2010
Amnesty International is planning to host its first Human Rights Art Festival in Silver Spring, next April.  The Arts and Humanities festival is a powerful way of brining cultural organizations, the community and businesses together, as well as highlighting the highest possibilities of the American social and political spheres. HELP A CHILD LEARN TO READ
Three local organizations including the George B. Thomas Learning Academy, Interages, and Passion for Learning are recruiting volunteers to tutor children in reading at more than 60 Montgomery County Public Schools through the "Ruth Rales Comcast Kids Reading Network."  Training and ongoing support plus all tutoring materials and books are provided at each school.  Middle and high school students can earn up to 30 service learning hours by volunteering.  Local elementary schools in need of tutors include Woodlin, Sligo Creek, Oak volunteer, Montgomery Knolls, East Silver Spring and Rosemary Hills.  To find out how to volunteer email Peggy Graham or call 301-279-3890.  For more information visit the reading network website.
