The Jefferson Café®
is both an event and a concept. It provides a format for a monthly
grassroots discussion focusing on topics in American life and the role of the United States
in the global community. It features no expert presenter, nor is it a
membership organization or advocacy group. Rather, it is a locus for a
conversation about ideas. The group is limited to 15-20 participants so that
everyone can see and hear everyone else while sitting around a conference
table. This session's topic will be "Civil and Uncivil Dialogue in America
in the Era of the Town Meeting" (including an analysis and critique of the
Jefferson Cafe discussion format).
The reading comprises selections from several contemporary authors and
