Join Rabbi Peter and Elaine Knobel for Beth Emet Israel Kallah

israeli flagThere's nothing more exciting than exploring Judaism in Israel through the eyes of leading Israeli scholars.

Join Rabbi Peter and Elaine Knobel for an unforgettable week of study in Jerusalem. The week-long program features a five-morning seminar led by Professor Noam Zohar of Tel Aviv University, a prominent specialist in Jewish Bioethics, entitled "On the Cutting Edge of Life and Death: Judaism and Bioethics". The week will also include:
  • Morning study with other leading scholars, including Professors Paul Liptz, Michael Marmur, Menachem Fisch and Rabbi Stanley Davids;
  • A half-day tour of the newly revised exhibit at Yad Vashem, Israel's Holocaust Memorial;
  • A Shabbat-eve celebration with our sister congregation Kehillat Tzur Hadassah;
  • Opportunities to attend worship at Hebrew Union College (HUC) and meet with leaders of the Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism;
  • Plenty of free time to explore Jerusalem and develop close relationships with other Beth Emet members.

This trip is ideal for veteran Israel travelers, as well as those who wish to experience Israel for the first time in a uniquely stimulating way. Additional excursions can be arranged for those who want to extend their stay.

Shabbat in Jerusalem is amazing; as the sun sets, the city settles down and the day transforms into something different. We look forward to sharing this intellectually and spiritually enriching experience with you.

Founding Director of Just Congregations to Speak
Beth Emet welcomes Rabbi Jonah Dov Pesner on Friday, September 19

open houseAs part of a weekend dedicated to our Just Congregations project, Rabbi Jonah Dov Pesner, the founding Director of Just Congregations of the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ), will speak at Beth Emet following services and a catered Kabbalat Shabbat dinner on Friday, September 19. Rabbi Pesner is a young, influential leader who works with synagogues pursuing social justice across the country, and teaches on all three campuses of the Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion.
Pesner's Just Congregations is a new way to foster congregation-based community organizing in religious organizations across the country. This idea is based on the community organizing model that posits that meeting individually with people and hearing their stories is a powerful way to connect people to social action work and into the life of the community. Beth Emet has adopted this model and has been working hard to facilitate one-on-one dialogues between congregants.

 RSVP now to join us for a fun and stimulating evening of great food, conversation and friends. If you RSVP before September 17, dinner is $14 per person ($18 per person thereafter). Let us know you're coming by contacting the office
or by phone at 847-869-4230, ext. 301.
Begin the High Holidays with S'lichot at Beth Emet
Join us for a dessert reception, panel discussion on social justice issues and service

It is a mitzvah to prepare for the High Holidays, and appropriately we begin this process with our S'lichot Service on September 20. The evening will begin at 9:30 p.m. with a dessert reception, followed by a panel discussion featuring Beth Emet congregants who are involved in a variety of ways with social justice activities entitled, "Tikkun Olam: How I can make a difference."

A
beautiful Havdallah service will begin at 11:15 p.m., followed by the S'lichot Service at 11:30 p.m. Join us for a meaningful, reflective night - a wonderful start to the Holiday season.
Labor on the Bimah
Beth Emet to participate in program during Labor Day weekend

open houseOn Friday, August 29, Beth Emet will welcome Ethan Michaeli, JCUA Board Member (Chair of the Policy Committee) and Publisher of Residents' Journal bi-weekly magazine. Michaeli will speak on Postville within the larger worker justice context.

Michaeli is part of a program that The National Interfaith Committee on Worker Issues has organized for Labor Day weekend called "Labor on the Bimah." Throughout the weekend, congregations around the nation will invite guest speakers to discuss various labor issues. Michaeli will present the D'var Torah (sermon) at the 6:30 p.m. Kabbalat Shabbat Service. We look forward to seeing you at what is sure to be an interesting discussion on a relevant topic.

We Did It!
Beth Emet's Early Childhood program NAEYC re-accreditated

open houseWe are pleased to tell you that the Early Childhood Program has achieved NAEYC re-accreditation. NAEYC (The National Association for the Education of Young Children) is the largest organization working on behalf of young children, and their accreditation is the mark of excellence in early childhood education.

The process was a lot of work, but it was worth it! Accreditation from the NAEYC Academy indicates that we are one of the first programs in the country to earn the mark of quality that the new accreditation system represents. Not only did we receive our accreditation, but we received extremely high "marks" in the percentage of met criteria in the NAEYC Accreditation Decision Report. Thanks to all for your support!

Also, we still have a few openings for children under 3 years of age in our program. We have small classes, wonderful teachers and a warm, Jewish environment. School begins soon, so let us know if you're interested!

For more information, contact the Directors of Early Childhood, Fran and Kathy at ext. 305.

Help Plan Beth Emet's Dinner/Auction

open houseOn Saturday, May 2, 2009, we are revitalizing the dinner/auction that was so much a part of Beth Emet for numerous years. This year's goal is to raise funds to secure a healthier financial future for our synagogue.

Our hope is to engage congregants across the entire membership spectrum, with the hope that every member will get involved. There are many ways to get involved. You can: choose to donate an item or a service, help with the actual dinner event, or become a sponsor, enabling those who would otherwise not be able to attend. We're challenging each of you to help us in this endeavor so that we can all be proud of this event.

Please consider helping us make this event a reality and join the planning committee. Our initial meeting will be on Monday, September 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Beth Emet. It will be fun and beneficial to the life of Beth Emet. For more information, contact
Beth Gomberg-Hirsch.

If you haven't been to Tot Shabbat before, check it out! The service is geared for young children with lots of singing, movement, a parade with the Torahs, and a story by one of the rabbis. After the service we go into room 101 for Kiddush, playing and socializing, and some bagels and treats. Tot Shabbat doesn't take a break in the summer! The next one is Saturday, September 13th at 9 a.m.  Tot Shabbat takes place on the second Saturday of each month.

Another wonderful family-friendly worship opportunity (with babysitting!) is Beth Emet's Kahal (Community) weekly Shabbat morning service beginning at 9:30 a.m. Follow this link to find out more!

One of Beth Emet's Greatest Success Stories: The Tzedakah Fund Committee
Information on Beth Emet's Tzedakah Fund Committee

Tzedakah Since the Tzedakah Fund Committee's founding in 1987 as a subcommittee of the Social Action Committee, more than ninety thousand ($90,000.00) dollars have been awarded in grants to local causes that promote justice, equality and social well-being. The Tzedakah Fund Committee meets at least three times a year, with the next meeting scheduled to discuss requests for assistance in November. The Beth Emet community will receive advance notification of the dates of Grant Application submission deadlines and additional scheduled committee meetings.

Tzedakah boxes are distributed to the entire Beth Emet congregational family. A box is given to each new member household and replacement boxes are readily available in the Synagogue office to those who need them. If you would like a tzedakah box, please stop by the office at your convenience.

Grant requests may come to the Tzedakah Fund Committee through a variety of ways:
  • A Synagogue Committee,
  • Synagogue Professional  (i.e., Rabbi, Cantor, Executive Director, Director of Education),
  • Individual synagogue members representing an organization.
If you would like to sponsor a request to the Tzedakah Fund Committee, please complete a Tzedakah Fund Application Form. Forms are available in the Synagogue office.

The Committee encourages you to begin making Tzedakah, the acts of righteousness through charitable giving, a family tradition every week by placing money in your Tzedakah box before the lighting of Shabbat Candles.

For any questions, please contact Mareon.
