Professor Morton Kamien is Emeritus Professor of Managerial Economics at Northwestern University's J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management and a world-renowned economics scholar.  He is also the youngest survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto and has a fascinating life story of his escape and survival, coming to this country and not speaking English, living in an orphanage, and rising to great heights of success and intellectual contributions.  Professor Kamien is an engaging speaker.

SHABBAT MISHPACHA

Get to know your 'Families' community! Come welcome and celebrate Shabbat together with other families with young children at the monthly Shabbat Mishpacha (Family Shabbat). Candle lighting at 5:20 followed by pot luck dinner and then family friendly Kabbalat Shabbat service. GETTING TO SINAI: THE SHAVUOT EXPERIENCE with Jane Shapiro

KABBALAT TORAH AT KABBALAT SHABBAT SERVICE

Join our twelfth grade students for their Kabbalat Torah ceremony.  They will lead us in worship and reflect on their Jewish identity as they graduate from Beth Emet's educational program and prepare to move on to the next stage of their life's journey.

The mission of Beth Emet's Interfaith Partnership Committee is to strengthen personal and institutional relationships between Jews and members of other faiths;, expand understanding, appreciation and respect for different religious beliefs and practices, unite people of various faith communities in a collective effort to hear the words of God's various prophets and then translate those messages into a more just and compassionate society.  We want to expand and renew the membership of this stimulating committee and invite you to join us as we begin to plan for the upcoming year.  Please RSVP to chairperson Bruce Ente and indicate your preference for meeting on Sunday morning, May 11, Monday evening, May 12, or Thursday evening, May 29.

Rabbi of Beth Emet's sister congregation, Kehillat Tzur Hadassah in Israel, Ofer Sabath Beit-Halachmi, and his wife, Rachel, scholar at the acclaimed Shalom Hartman Center Jerusalem, will be our scholars-in-residence in honor of Israel's 60th anniversary. Both are dynamic and charismatic speakers and surely will be a highlight of our year-long celebration.  
Friday, May 16: After Shabbat Dinner, Rachel will speak on "Two Hearts-One Soul? The Significance of Israel for American Jews Today"
Saturday, May 17: Ofer will give the D'var Torah at Kahal: "Israeli Spirituality Today: Prayer and Rituals for a New Generation"

CHASSAMBA'S END OF YEAR LOCK-IN

Summer's almost here so don't miss your last chance to hang out with all of your Chassamba friends in one place. That's right it's our final event of the 2007-2008 school year. For one night only we will have all of Beth Emet to ourselves. So join us for fun, friendship, and flashlight capture the flag. Dust off your DDR chops,  Sing along with your Youth Director, or just chill. We'll meet for dinner in the Perlman Room  at 7:30 pm and go until Sunday School starts the next morning.  Fifth Graders, if you want a taste of our Junior Youth Group we invite you to attend the first few hours of the evening. SPERTUS TOUR & EXHIBIT 
Sunday, May 18 from 11:15 am to 1:45 pm
Don't miss this great opportunity to see the fabulous new Spertus Museum and "Imaginary Coordinates" Exhibit!  Join us for a group tour of the beautiful and exciting new Spertus Museum! The tour will include exploring the wondrous architecture, the Spertus expanded collection on display and "Imaginary Coordinates", an exhibit that is a part of the City of Chicago's Festival of Maps. This exhibit will feature the contemporary work of Israeli and Palestinian artists along side antique and modern maps of the Holy Land that explore religious, colonial and national ambitions.  Come yourself or bring your family and/or friends - whether Beth Emet members or not. (The tour is appropriate for those over 16.) The Museum even has wheel chairs. With a registration of 25 participants who wish to ride together we will be able to charter a coach bus. The cost for the entire trip with the chartered bus and the group tour will be only $20. The cost for the Group Tour alone is $10.  To register call Mayta at ext. 306 or email her.

A sure sign of spring is Network 's Annual Cubs game.  This year it is  a 1:20 pm game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.  The ticket price is $34.00, plus $11.00 which covers bus transportation.  This is always a popular event so make your plans early. COHEN FOUNDATION FUNDRAISER

The Naomi Ruth Cohen Charitable Foundation is proud to announce that Tracy Harris, renowned flutists and Yamaha Performing Artist will perform at Beth Emet.  Her versatility has seen her playing with Sting on PBS and Disney Studios, and also performing as a soloist and orchestral musician with a number of orchestras.  Ms. Harris suffers from schizoaffective disorder, and as she explains in her book, Music of Madness, the depths of her despair and how proper help and medication can help lead to a life as it is meant to be.  Her performance Saturday evening ties in with her presentation at the Mental Health Conference the next day here at Beth Emet.

Women's Voices: Understanding the Mental Health Issues of Women and Girls

This year's conference will listen to women's voices discussing the mental health issues of women and girls.  The speakers will address questions across the life cycle and will present the facts that girls, parents of girls, and men who care about women need to know.  The three outstanding speakers who will address this issue are Dr. Laura Miller of the University of Illinois, Chicago; Mary Jo Barrett of the Center for Contextual Change, and Tracy Harris, an internationally renowned flutist who suffers from schizoaffective disorder.  For more information visit the Foundation's website.
