2010 United Way Campaign in Full Swing
Jeff and Virginia RushUnited Way of Berks County's 2010 Campaign has kicked into high gear, with thousands of individuals and companies already pledging their support to help raise $8.7 million for those most in need in our community.

"We're off to a great start," said Jeff Rush, who co-chairs the 2010 campaign with his wife, Virginia.  "To date, we've raised $3.4 million, which is 39% of our goal.  We still have a long way to go but we're optimistic that we'll achieve - and hopefully exceed - our goal."

United Way of Berks County is grateful for the support of the many sponsors who make our work possible.  To learn more about these generous companies, visit the Campaign Headquarters section of our website and click on Campaign Sponsors.

Day of Caring Volunteers Stuff the Bus, Help Local Organizations

Armed with paint brushes, rakes, books and hot meals, more than 300 volunteers blanketed Berks County for the annual Day of Caring, an event to bring people together to help them understand how their efforts make a difference in the lives of local children, adults, families and seniors.

The traditional Stuff the Bus collection drive kicked off the day's activities, with more than 20,000 school supply items donated by employees at local companies to help children in need in our community.  In an earlier Stuff the Bus collection drive, The Reading Hospital and Medical Center collected nearly 15,000 items.  Additional drives held in conjunction with Day of Caring collected professional clothing to help individuals get back into the workforce and basic home items to assist families in crisis.

Once again, Berks Countians have demonstrated their LIVE UNITED spirit, whether donating to a collection drive, sorting food or delivering Meals or Wheels. Thank you to all participants and to the companies who supported this effort.

FamilyWize Prescription Discounts Top $500,000

Increased healthcare costs and escalated unemployment rates often challenge a family's ability to afford prescription medications. Thanks to the FamilyWize Community Service Partnership and United Way of Berks County, help is available through a prescription drug discount card.

The discount card is available to anyone, regardless of income, age or how often prescriptions are filled. The card may be used for any medication not covered by insurance, and all FDA approved brand name and generic drugs are covered. Even if an individual has health insurance coverage, but needs a prescribed medication not covered through their insurance, the discount card may be used. The discount card does not apply to mail order prescriptions.

In the past two years, United Way has distributed more than 50,000 cards with 31,592 claims filed.  Those claims represent more than $504,000 in savings for Berks County residents.
