Supporters Shine at 46th Annual United Way Dinner and Awards

Nearly 500 United Way supporters filled the ballroom of the Reading Crowne Plaza recently to celebrate United Way's accomplishments and to honor the many individuals, organizations and companies that come together to create lasting change in our community.

Ruth MathewsRuth Mathews, executive director of United Community Services, was presented with the Wilbur H. Doran Award in recognition of her work with United Way and in the community.  Ruth has served United Way in almost every capacity - from the Board of Directors to Campaign to Community Impact.  She has been a guiding force in the partnership between United Way and Labor, and she has dedicated her life to improving our community.  Her ability to bring people together, her keen insight and her tenacity have made her an invaluable volunteer to our organization.

In addition to the other awards presented throughout the evening, highlights of the event included the announcement of the FirstEnergy Foundation $100,000 Challenge Match in support of Leadership Giving, the recognition of numerous sponsors and supporters, and the introduction of Steve and Pam Schumacher as the 2009 Campaign Co-Chairs.

United Way of Berks County is grateful to D&E Communications for sponsoring the Annual Dinner.  We are also thankful to Lasting Image Promotional Products and Apparel for providing LIVE UNITED mugs to each of our guests and for their outstanding support throughout the year.  For a complete list of award recipients, please see below.  Sponsors recognized at the event are listed in the sidebar.

Support the Letter Carriers Food Drive
Food Drive

On May 9, letter carriers throughout Berks County will be collecting non-perishable food items as part of the the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

The food drive will help stock the Greater Berks Food Bank for the summer months when there is a great need. Letter carriers in the following areas will be participating:
Reading, Birdsboro, Douglassville,  Fleetwood, Kutztown, Temple, Shoemakersville, Hamburg, Mohnton, Wolmelsdorf, Robesonia, and Wernersville.  Please note that any areas not listed will not have letter carriers collecting food.

To participate, leave a non- perishable food item in your mailbox on the morning of May 9th and your letter carrier will pick up the item(s) during the regular mail delivery.  Please refrain from non- perishable food items in glass due to transporting them back to the staging area.

To make a cash donation, please direct your gift to the Greater Berks Food Bank.

Thank you for your support!
