Self-Leadership

Kathleen & Kathy
Key thoughts from the presentation given  to the Virginias/Carolina region by Kathy Atkins,
The Lattitude Group.

People who do not practice self-awareness, accurate self-assessment, self-confidence and self-regard are not effective leaders.

Why is self-awareness important?
-  Allows our actions to be driven by values and goals
-  Links our feelings and reactions          -  Being aware of our moods

Why is an accurate self-assessment important?
-  Know strengths and weaknesses         -  Accept self "as is"
-  Learn from experiences                         -  Accept feedback

Why is self-confidence important?
-  Strengths to make tough decisions
-  Strong presence
-  Powerful influencer

Why is self-regard important?
-  How we feel about ourselves

Other ways to increase self-leadership
Reinvent Yourself
1.  Define vision/purpose
2.  Read/listen/study
3.  Put thoughts into writing/journal
4.  Request feedback/identify "blind spots"
5.  Engage in formal self-development
6.  Exercise spaced repetition/practice/teach
7.  Plan, set goals

HOUSE LUST STILL ALIVE.
Poor Dan McGinn. His book House Lust, published in January by Doubleday, amid the mortgage crisis. But his premise remains valid: a contagion of people spending hundreds of thousands adding lavish kitchens, family rooms, master suites to the homes they live in now; watching hour after hour of HGTV; longing for even more, something with "artistic imagination, dreamy, something different." Wake up, people. Even now, perhaps especially now, we home furnishing folk can make use of these passions, if we will.

LOOK-ALIKE INDUSTRY?  Stanford law students have started handing out "diversity report cards" to big law firms, ranking them by how many female, blacks, Hispanics, Asians, and gay lawyers they have. And they're publishing their rankings at www.betterlegalprofession.org. Nuff said.

WHICH KEYWORD RESEARCH TOOL IS BEST?  From a guy who ought to know, "most are a scam, selling you data that you can find elsewhere for free." There isn't a best, the good tools are much alike, and they include: Wordze, Keyword Discovery, Wordtracker. Thanks, copyblogger.com

BUSINESS INFLUENCERS 2008.
Forces you can't afford to ignore this year, including those you know, climate change, China, declining dollar, mortgage crisis. And: shrinking middle class, health care (changes the elections will bring, perhaps reducing the employer's burden in the equation, or not), and interestingly. . . trust. Think lead in toys¬ (or, in our case, wood sourcing, etc). Though Americans' trust in global business is at an all-time low, according to the Edelman Trust Barometer 2007, 58% of college grad opinion leaders say they trust business. Folk trust local brands more. And "people are nearly twice as likely to believe a regular employee of a company as they are the CEO." So, empower employees to be truthful and act on problems. Entrepreneur Magazine, Mar 08.

IT'S THE NEWS, NOT THE PAPER. But the newspaper devolution prompts thoughts, including:  "We are dismantling the institution of newspaper journalism precisely at the moment when it seems to be of greatest social value." Malcolm Gladwell, author of The Tipping Point, and Blink.

WHICH BRINGS TO MIND, OTHER PRINT. Goodbye to a great friend, House & Garden, 100+ years in service to Home Makers, last issue December 07. To all the great writers and editors, much love, and we hope to travel with you along new pathways to shared truth and beauty.

CAN'T GET ENOUGH TRENDSPOTTING?  "The Heights of Fashion in the World of Architecture," what all well-dressed buildings should wear in 2008:
· Metallics: evolved with special effects, Corten (rusty) steel, metal mesh, brass and gold, perforated.
· Crystal Shapes: deliberately clunky, asymmetric, or resembling a spaceship from a 1950s B-movie.
· The Natural Look: old-style texture, organic, tweedy, authentic, appearing hand-hewn, always partnered with a directional modern shape.
· Coming (even in architecture): Big Bold Prints, florals the most obvious, also geometrics, mosaics, arabesque, Islamic. "Be warned: easy to overdo." As for Acid Color, been-there, "too try-hard," on the way out, fast.  Tom Dyckoff, The (London) Times, Feb 23 08.

AND, FINALLY ARRIVED, NEW NOUVEAU. We've been looking for you. Seen on Spring runways, hair shows, jewelry collections: curling brass hair combs, twisted tendrils or voluminous waves, nymph pendants, Werkstatte broaches, Klimt and William Morris everything, Cecil Beaton interiors, woodland fairy romanticism (natural and carnal), plus florals, florals everywhere. The original Art Nouveau was driven by those weary and wary of industrialization - New Nouveau is driven by those weary and wary of informationization?

SAVE THE DATE
August 12-14

Our 2008 education conference has been planned to focus on leadership and networking and we hope it will be a must attend for our entire membership!  In addition to our stellar keynote speakers, Leslie Haskins and Andy Hines, we are adding a new twist for our attendees. Our education committee has chosen 21 topics to be moderated by 21 different industry leaders known for their expertise in that table's topic. You will have the opportunity to choose 4 of these topics prior t
o attending the conference so you can get your specific questions answered and take away concrete, actionable ideas to impact the bottom line of your business. This will also provide you the opportunity to network on mutual topics of interest with other attendees around your table. We will also have great in-depth pre-conference workshops and breakout session speakers, too. Watch for the full schedule to appear soon.

Getting to Yes
Creating Buy-In throughout an Organization, a Committee, a Peer - even your dog

by Kathleen Holterman, French Heritage

Case in point: my dog is old and cannot walk as well as she could but still has the desire. Needing to continue my exercise, I bought her a shiny red Radio Flyer wagon for Christmas. My plan; after she gets tired of walking, the wagon will be nice for her to ride in while I continue on our old trails.

First trip out:  I pulled the wagon as she walked. At our usual turn, I lifted her into the wagon. Needless to say that first night was not a real success. Lady got her exercise - every three feet she jumped out of the wagon and I hoisted her back in. She was uneasy with the change, afraid.  This was new, scary and not part of her agenda.  I understood the plan and she did not. I did not have her buy-in.

Buy-in can be defined as the understanding, commitment, and action of people working to achieve a strategic goal. In 21st-century business, buy-in has become a crucial asset, and the ability to generate it has emerged as a leadership competency.

If you are met with all the resistance imaginable to your plan as I was with Lady, you realize that you did not lead and most importantly did not get the goal met (the wagon sits on the front porch).  In most cases, quitting is not an option, so you analyze the situation, begin again deciding how to salvage the operation, get the needed buy-in and go on with a plan, not just your plan.

A leader may create wonderful ideas and plans, but for a leader to become an executor, she generates buy-in gaining the support of her followers to accomplish the plan..
