Letter from the New Executive Director

Kevin Paschke
Kevin Paschke

First, thank you for the warm welcome I've received from all the members I've met so far. It has been exciting to hear both your business stories of how you've navigated this explosive business climate and especially your passion for the Williston area.

In this 103rd year of the Chamber's history, I feel truly fortunate to be serving you.

My heroes have always been business owners and business leaders. Those who have a VISION to build a business that brings value to the community. They come in early, stay late and do whatever it takes to serve the customer. They go the "extra-mile". It's not always "easy" work. Employees don't always show up. There are constant fires to put out. All kinds of business challenges are never in short supply. However, at the end of the day, these business leaders feel the satisfaction of being part of our great american free enterprise System. These vibrant businesses in town are a key driver in building a world-class community.

To protect our members' interests, we'll be proactive in advocating for your business concerns at every level of government. We'll help nurture new businesses and help maintain and enhance an environment that fosters a spirit of entrepreneurship.

In 2011, expect to see your Chamber break ground on new educational programs and new member benefits. In January, we'll be sending out a robust survey to ask what specific areas we can best serve you.

Unlike the rest of the country, businesses here are facing intense growth challenges. Our goal is help you in any way possible to alleviate obstacles standing in your way. That's why your survey results are so important to us. Please invest the time in the survey to let us understand what your priorities are.

Thank you for your continued commitment to the Williston Area Chamber of Commerce.

Warmly,

Kevin Paschke, Executive Director

PS - I look forward to meeting many of you at our Dec. 3rd luncheon. Before then, don't hesitate to stop by our office. I would enjoy hearing the story of your business from you personally.

Parade Participants Sought

LUHP ParadeHelp us make this year's parade the best yet!  Consider entering "The Parade of Lights," offering a concession or providing musical entertainment for the November 26, "Light Up Harmon Park" celebration!  Our theme this year is "The Sights and Sounds of Christmas."  Judges will award prizes, in "Chamber Bucks", to the top three entries!

The Chamber is looking for Floats, Choirs, and Bands for the parade. Your entry can be anything, as long as it has lights.  Consider entering a float, fish house, sleigh, buggy, pick-up truck full of singers or even a marching band!  Choirs, carolers or Christmas ensembles are also being sought to perform downtown before or after the parade.  You are invited to share your culinary delights at the park, with all proceeds going to your organization.

To participate, download a participation form at www.willistonchamber.net or call 701-577-6000.

News You Can Use

2010 CensusTodd Wiltgen, from the US Census Bureau, shared the following information about the 2010 Census Count for our area:

·         Williston's mail back return rate was 72%.

·         Enumerators then collected the remaining 28% of non-responses through in person follow-ups.  Williston had a complete count!  100% of the livable areas in Williston were counted!  According to Todd, the only people who may have been missed are those who were living in places that were not reported as households (i.e., quonsets, barns, etc).

·         Enumerators finished in August, instead of September, which saved the government a lot of money.

·         Census workers are no longer conducting in-person visits.  However every year, the Census conducts random telephone surveys.

·         Results will be shared with the President of the US by December 2010.

·         Results will be shared with the Governor of ND between February - April 2011.

·         Williston housing vacancy rate will be available to the public in late summer/early fall 2011.

·         Williston's and Williams County's 2010 population growth stats will be released in June/July 2011.

·         In November/December 2010, the US Census Bureau will release its first American Community Survey 5-year estimates for small areas.  Williston's information will be a part of this survey.  This survey provides a fresh look at how communities are changing.  For more information, visit this link:  http://factfinder.census.gov
