At 17,000 ft plus, Shiti (white) dhar (peak) is the perfect introductory peak for mountaineering. It is ideal for trekkers without climbing experience, wanting to summit a Himalayan peak . It's south face offers a straightforward but challenging route to the summit. Shitidhar's accessibility makes it doubly attractive. The base camp, by the emerald Beas Kund, the source of the Beas, is just a day's trek away from Manali.

Big white water, spectacular African scenery and warm sunny weather! One of the many highlights is bobbing around at the base of the magnificent Victoria Falls - definitely one of the more dramatic places on this planet to begin a 7 day river adventure. Your Days are spent challenging running rapids like 'Oblivion' and 'Stairway to Heaven' while your nights involve camping on expansive beaches of white sand, listening to the noises of wild Africa. And after completing one of the most exhilarating adventures in the world, you can head off to sample the wildlife viewing that this region is famous for. The last year was certainly one of the most forgetful, with terror striking at the very heart of our nation, repeatedly. It has been disappointing to see the pain and suffering this has caused, to so many of us.
We encourage guests on all our Himalayan trips to continue planning and not be discouraged by the recent developments. In the emerging world order, we will build in quick exits out of arrival cities, to save time, money and reduce all variables for a hasty induction to the Indian Himalaya ; which, even today, remain one of the safest regions in the world, despite the fear, violence and paranoia that seems to overwhelm us every now and then.

Mahakali expedition, Feb 20-28 & Nov 2-10, 2009
The Kali river forms the international border between India and Nepal. A trip right out of jungle book, it is arguably, the best wilderness trip, offering over a 100 kms of pristine wilderness in a week long adventure as you pass by terraced farms of Kumaoni and Nepali villages, fresh water streams, sandy beaches, thick tropical jungles, plantations as we travel downstream through the terai belt.

With a host of trekking departures right throughout the year, you will certainly find one to your liking.

For those who have tasted the sheer joy & thrill of trekking in the Himalaya would surely wish to be up on a Himalayan summit !
Pangarchulla, a relatively low mountain east of Kuari Pass, accumulates a lot of snow in the winters and makes a great climbing objective for spring. Some great views, the blooming Rhododendrons, and an ocassional flutter of butterflies make the climb truly special.
A perfect introduction to the sport of mountaineering ! |
Drives at 14,000 feet, an ancient culture, and a run down big volume rapids set in the land of 1000 year old monasteries, and traverse the entire region in a fortnight of high adventure! |
Jul 4-19, 2009
Possibly the toughest in the Indian Himalayas, this trek starts along the old pilgrim trail to Gaumukh and then traverses across many glaciers to go over the high pass and drops down towards the Arwa glacier to Exit at Badrinath. The walk is mostly over the moraines and the snow fields with deep crevasses and offers some magical views of high mountains like the Shivling, Meru, Bhagirathi & Satopanth.

Walking at an average altitude of 4500m for about 10 days and sleeping at freezing temperatures this trip is a lot more than just a trek.
People wishing to undertake this trip should have good physical fitness and experience of trekking at high altitudes.

Beginning our trip from Rampur Bushair, we drop over 350 metres in the first two days of running continuous Class 3+/4 rapids, the Sutlej drops in one of the most consistent runs in the Himalaya. |
Our 2006 and 2008 trips were the only open descents of this river, and with a 116 m high hydel dam being built which would span the lower mountain mouth of this beautiful river by Sep 2010, there is little time left to savor this nature's blessing and part take in this unique experience. We are looking forward to a kayak descent from Nacho and a raft descent from Taliha / Sippi over Xmas and New Years Eve, 2009-2010.

Guaranteed Departure but space limited !! The Tsarap Chu river carries glacial affluents from the Rupshu plateau and runs for a few kms along the Manali Leh highway north of the Baralacha Pass before taking a tortuous course through the mountains flowing in the north-west direction.
It abruptly turns south through a gorge which at places is as narrow as 3 metres. It flows past the great Phuktal gompa which is constructed within a huge cave in the cliff face, parts of monastery cling precariously to the sheer wall and take advantage of every little projection. It joins the Kargiakh flowing from Shingo-La to form Lugnak which again for much of its length is narrow, rocky and forbidding - the name Lugnak means "dark gorge". Very little is known about the trail along the Tsarap which at a few places has to be crossed on rope bridges. The trek finishes at Padum, the heart of Zanskar. |
From the entire team at Aquaterra Adventures, we wish you a fabulous 2009! We thank you for the support we have received from all of you since our inception 15 years ago, as we continue to strive to offer high value products in the Indian Himalayas' remote mountain regions. Aquaterra Adventures was featured on a list of the world's best adventure travel outfitters in the first Authoritative Rating of Adventure Tour Operators, selected and conducted in a global survey by National Geographic Society. For 2009, we are once again on that premier list of adventure travel companies. We are happy to be recognised by the global adventure travel community.
This is what the National Geographic Society says :: For the second time in as many years, we've conducted an unprecedented survey of adventure travel companies, based on the idea that a traveler's most important decision is not always where to go but who to go with. For the 2009 edition, we spoke to more guide services-and their clients-than ever before (248 in all). We contacted companies that lead 85,000 people a year and those that cater to a hundred. We surveyed paddling outfitters, trekking guides, safari specialists, and the ones that do it all. We evaluated companies that will take you places you've only dreamed of (the Tibetan Plateau, the Serengeti on foot) and those that specialize in your own backyard (the Grand Canyon, the Grand Tetons). And after asking them the tough questions (Have you tested your risk management strategies? Are your guides trained to "leave no trace"?), we scored each one using criteria synonymous with National Geographic-environmental awareness, reliable service, local knowledge. Because in a time when travel dollars are stretched, it's essential that an outfitter deliver the trip of a lifetime, the first time. These are the world's leading travel specialists. Each offers a unique way to explore the planet. The only question now is: Who will you go with?

Using National Geographic ADVENTURE's global outfitter database and with assistance from Sustainable Travel International, The Adventure Travel Trade Association, The International Ecotourism Society, and other travel and tourism organizations, we reached out to hundreds of tour companies around the world. The outfitters were asked to complete a comprehensive, 30-question survey. Each survey was scored from 1-100 in each of the following categories: Education, Sustainability, Quality of Service, and Spirit of Adventure. Researchers then randomly interviewed client references for every company based on the same categories and generated a fifth score, also between 1 and 100. Each outfitter's overall score represents the average of these five scores. A team of ADVENTURE editors and travel experts then vetted those with overall scores of 85 and above. From this pool of candidates, we identified the best adventure travel companies, which are profiled here. |
