Happenings from Mint Creek Farm

A BLESSING SEASON

Fall is a wonderful time at Mint Creek Farm. The intense summer heat is past, days are warm to cool, and nights cool to chilly. Our animals have perked up out of their summer doldrums. Nervousness pervades with winter approaching. The constant battle of life over death, is usually easier, however all know all too well that surviving winter is another matter.

An attempt is made to beef up if you are a cow. A good fat cover is insulation from the cold. For the sheep and goats breeding is instinct for spring lambs and kids.  The pasture quality can be quite challenging. Often dry weather has left little regrowth for grazing. The Freedom Ranger Chickens are on their home stretch with two more batches for processing before winters respite. The turkeys have made their impact known eating us out of house and home.  They have rapidly grown, hopefully ignorant of the Thanksgiving fate that befalls them. Our grassroots pigs are gruntled enjoying the ease of rooting in a pasture that has seen some moisture, after having been tired of the impossibility of rooting in the dry summer rock hard clay.

Now is a good time for manure to be spread as that previously composted is by now well rotted. Barns and animal housing need to be prepped for winter shelter. The Celtic ritual of Samhain allows for the culling of animals not able to survive or be fed out through winter. As chores become infinitely more difficult in 10-degree weather with a 30 mile an hour wind, not to mention a foot of snow, any simplification of chore doing becomes paramount going into winter.

Come join us for our farm tour on October 8th to dabble in this life with a wonderful white tablecloth meal produced with exquisite care by a local gem of a chef. As given to us by Polonius in Shakespeare's Hamlet "This above all: to thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.  Farewell, my blessing season this in thee!"

Interns Needed

Mint Creek Farm is looking for interns for the fall/winter season.  If you or someone you know is interested in learning how healthy, great tasting meat is produced give Julie a call at 708-828-4325.  This is a learning experience through hands-on, day-to-day work and fun.  Experience not needed but a willingness to get the job done is.
