Back to School Vaccinations Guide

backtoschool Back-to-school time means shopping for school or dorm room supplies, picking classes and savoring summer's waning days. But getting vaccinations is another item that should be on the to-do list.

Though people may consider vaccinations to be something only young kids need, there are vaccines that are recommended for older kids and teens, as well as adults.

Podiatric Surgery: Patient Profile

Podiatric SurgeryVery few podiatric surgeons in the country offer the kind of procedure Todd Brown needed to keep his feet in working order, something the Woonsocket instructional technology specialist needed to perform his job.

Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island happens to offer one of those rare surgeons and Brown happily sought his care last year.

Do You Have an Advance Directive?
The use of advance directives or instructive directives, such as a Living Will or Durable Power of Attorney, allows an individual to participate indirectly in future medical care decisions, even if they become decisionally incapacitated. Advance directives can help ensure that future care is consistent with previous desires.

How do you avoid heat related illnesses?

David

Ashley, MD

Medical Director Family Care Center

(View Bio)

This is the time of year that we are susceptible to heat illness. On the mild end of the spectrum, heat cramps of the muscles occur. Increasing symptoms with dehydration lead to heat exhaustion and eventually to severe illness, or heat stroke.

Victims of heat illness are usually those doing exercise or physical work in a hot environment. Babies and the elderly, often less mobile, are less efficient with heat transfer, making them more vulnerable. Obese persons are at higher risk due to decreased ability to off load excess heat. Increased weight requires more effort during activities in hot environments. Certain medications, alcohol use and dehydration will increase vulnerability to heat illness.
