Virginia Science Standards Updated to 21st Century By Jim Batterson: Three panels of practicing physicists, chemists and engineers met in the summer of 2007 to review Virginia's science standards of learning to make recommendations to the state board of education in time for the 2010 septennial science standards and curriculum framework review process. The panels found that while Virginia's science standards and framework were well organized, well written, and easy to understand, the content itself was severely dated to the early 1960's - or what was referred to as "Sputnik-era science". It wasn't "bad" science, but just did not include any science from the past 50 years. Read more...

ODU sea level rise research, Navy adds expertise: ODU unveiled an initiative to become a national hub for research, teaching and expertise in rising sea levels related to climate change. The Blue Planet Forum was held on the same day with RADM David Titley, Oceanographer of the Navy and Director of Task Force Climate Change spoke about the threats of climate change and how the Navy is preparing to cope with them.

Hampton Roads' Vision for Regional Transit: The Hampton Roads Regional Transit Vision Plan is a look into the future of transit - 2025 and beyond - to imagine what may be possible for the region's transit customers. It considers a variety of modes - everything from an expanded light rail system, streetcar services, bus rapid transit, high-speed ferry, to express and enhanced bus services. The plan is not a set of approved projects. The idea is to see what mode makes the most sense for a given community or corridor. Read more...
