Hampton Roads ranks 42nd in exports:  The report, from the Brookings Institution, measures the export output for 100 metro areas in the U.S. It says that Hampton Roads had $6.72 billon in exports, most of it transportation equipment, which made up 38.8 percent of exports out of the area. Hampton Roads leads large metro areas in personal income growth:  The Hampton Roads region saw slight growth in personal income last year and the highest increase among the nation's largest metropolitan areas, according to estimates by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Read more...

Virginia first in Defense Spending:  For the first time in at least 16 years, Virginia became the number one state for direct Department of Defense expenditures. According to DoD's annual Atlas/Data Abstract, Virginia received almost $57 billion in FY09, including about $18 billion in payroll and nearly $39 billion in contracts. New military facility for Chesapeake:  A $64 million, 400-cell military correctional facility is being built at the Norfolk Naval Support Activity, Northwest Annex, in southern Chesapeake. The medium security facility is part of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process. Read more...

Va. Beach rewarded for efforts to retain Oceana Naval Air Station:  Military and civilian personnel are scheduled to leave Suffolk or be transferred to another command in Hampton Roads in a year. The same issue surfaced in Virginia Beach in 2005. That city reacted with a plan to keep the U.S. Navy's air base, Naval Air Station Oceana, from leaving. Read more...
