Austin among fastest growing cities
Austin Business Journal - April 13, 2011

John Suh had a simple set of requirements for a new, 160-employee regional office for LegalZoom, a fast-growing online legal document service. It had to be within two-and-a-half hours by air from LegalZoom's headquarters in Los Angeles, and there had to be a large pool of college-educated talent nearby. Suh considered Las Vegas, San Antonio and Phoenix before hitting on Austin, Texas. In the end the competition wasn't even close.
With the 52,000-student University of Texas in Austin, "you've got a wealth of educated, very talented workers across the board," says Suh, LegalZoom's chief executive. The company also got a "fantastic deal" on subleased office space north of downtown, as well as up to $2 million in incentives from state and local governments. "I have not seen a city and state government work that quickly and efficiently anywhere," Suh says. Now LegalZoom is preparing to expand. "We expect the next 500 people at LegalZoom to be in Austin," he says.
One of Austin's biggest attractions is California-like ambiance at a fraction of the cost. Suh says it's much easier to attract managers to Austin than to Southern California, because houses cost half as much and the public schools are excellent. And then there's Austin's cherished reputation as the counterculture capital of Texas, birthplace of psychedelic-rock pioneers the Thirteenth Floor Elevators and the popular slogan "Keep Austin Weird."
"A critical part of the decision to grow there was the culture of the city itself," says Suh.

Austin #5 in Greatness Study
Austin Business Journal - May 24, 2011

Austin was ranked fifth on a new list of cities considered to be poised on the edge of greatness.
The rankings were compiled by research firm Sperling's BestPlaces for the makers of Edge Shave Gel and based on such factors as sports, art, music, culture and population growth.
San Francisco was first, followed in order by Boston, Denver and Portland, Ore. After Austin, Seattle, Wash. was ranked No. 6; followed by Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Salt Lake City.
The report had this to say about Austin: "Known for its 'Keep Austin Weird' tagline, Austin may soon boast about greatness instead. The 'Live Music Capital of the World' ranks fourth in the category of indie music and nails the top spot in the city category with a high percentage of young, well-educated residents, a healthy economy and substantial green building activity."

Lady Bird Hike & Bike Trail Celebrates 40 Years
KXAN.com - May 20, 2011
Did you know the trail extends along the entire east side of BartonPlace and will soon connect directly to the Lady Bird Lake trail system - we're excited!

The Hike and Bike Trail around Lady Bird Lake turned 40 years old Tuesday, May 17th.
"The trail itself is the most important public space in Austin," said Susan Rankin, executive director of The Trail Foundation . Whether you're jogging, pushing a stroller, or going for a leisurely morning stroll - the 10-mile Hike and Bike Trail is considered by many to be the centerpiece of Austin.
"I really think the trail is what changed downtown," said Les Gage, founder of Town Lake Beautification Committee. Les Gage should know. He was appointed the task of turning the barren land around what was formerly Town Lake into something useable.
"It all changed when Ms. Johnson willed it to change. She had a wonderful way of asking and getting what she asked for," said Gage. Lady Bird Johnson wanted to see the industrial look of the area disappear. "The sand and gravel company was running a dredge up and down the river from the bottom and deepening the river," said Gage.
And there were no trees. Les and his committee raised money to plant 3,000 trees around the trail and spent two years creating the path. And when it was complete, it looked good.
"We all thought this looks nice but what are we going to use that for?" asked Gage.
It wasn't long before Austinites started using it.
Today it's estimated that upwards of 15,000 people are on the trail everyday. The latest improvements are underneath the MoPac bridge.

Austin Beerworks Introduces "World Class Beer from a World Class Town"
It's hot outside. That means swimming holes and cold beer. But wait, your favorite place to chill out won't allow you to sip on your favorite beer because of a pesky "no glass" policy. And it seems a shame to wrap your prized koozie around a sub-par canned beer. What's a bikini-clad beer snob to do? Austin Beerworks is to the rescue!
Austin Beerworks is the newest kid on the beer brewing block in Austin, but it does not come without talent and passion. Owners Adam Debower and Will Golden are veterans of other reputable breweries, while owners Michael Graham and Mike McGovern have dabbled in home brewing for a long time. Connected by ties to Austin and the dream of opening a brewery, the four combined sweat and dreams to become the city's only brewers (for now - Hops + Grain and Jester King also have can plans for the future) of canned beer.
"Hell-bent on excellence," the fellows of Austin Beerworks strive to bring what Will calls "a unique style to the Austin brewing scene, which is bold and clean hop-forward beers". The result is a northwest style of brewing which offers full flavor but with a dry finish. This balance is reflected in their first three releases, Fire Eagle IPA, Peacemaker Extra Pale and Pearl Snap Pilsner.
With the brewery's partially manual canning machine arriving later this week, you can expect to see Austin Beerworks' cans available at beer-centric merchandisers around Austin starting the beginning of July. The brewery's goal is to offer exceptional craft beer at a reasonable price. The handsome, yet kitschy, tear drop design was created by Christian Helms of Helms Workshop. It's so sleek, you almost don't want to cover it up with a koozie.
