Greetings!
Pink Girl with Beer

Knowledge is everything. If you don't know about beer, you can't care about beer. We care. Learn from us.

If you are a woman beer professional, you may at times feel like a lily in a wilderness of sequoias, but I guarantee that you are not alone. We may be few, yet we are many: 786 members worldwide as I write this e-newsletter.

As I have often repeated, there is no glass ceiling in the beer industry. The only glass ceiling is an education celing. I have also often said that we teach each other. That's what PBS members do. The more you get involved, the more you learn.

So join us: The next national meeting is May 4th at 11:30am in San Diego, followed quickly by our bonus national meeting on July 28th at 4:00pm in Portland, Oregon. See you at one or both!

Announcing our third National meeting for 2012!

Every four years the World Brewing Congress* is held somewhere in the world, and each summer Portland hosts the Oregon Brewers Festival, when PBS-Pacific Northwest hosts one of its two semi-annual regional meetings. (Photo above from PNW-Regional December meeting.)

These two events will collide at our joint WBC National/PNW-Regional PBS meeting on July 28, 2012 from 4:00-6:00pm. If you will be in Portland for either the OBF or the WBC, we encourage you to meet your PBS sisters at this Happy Hour meeting. More info here.

* The WBC is a joint meeting of the Master Brewers Association of the Americas and the American Society of Brewing Chemists, with active participation by the Brewery Convention of Japan, European Brewery Convention, and the Institute of Brewing and Distilling
BRING MOM OUT FOR A BEER
Ben's Mom with Beer
Ben Edmund's Mom, Nancy

Jump-start the "Mother of all Beer Weeks" by hosting your very own Bring Mom Out For A Beer event on May 13th. Mother's Day is one day before American Beer Week starts, so the timing couldn't be better.

This Mother's Day, May 13 from 1-4PM, raise a pint to honor the world's first beer brewers - women. We invite breweries, brewpubs, restaurants, bottle shops and patrons to participate in our international educational campaign, Bring Mom Out For A Beer (BMOFAB).

Jon's Mom with Beer
Jon Graber's Mom, Tina

Not only were women the first brewers, but those first women brewers were also mothers. From the earliest days of domesticated grain cultivation (3500 BCE), women were responsible for beer making in the home, since it was considered a provisional food group.* And many argue it still is.

All participating establishments are invited to post their Mother's Day festivities on www.craftbeer.com under "Events," or on BMOFAB 2012's Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/BringMomOutForABeer2012.

Send us a picture of your Mom enjoying a beer on Mother's Day, and we may put it in next year's e-newsletter. Click here for the Press Release.

More proof it takes a TEAM to make Pink Boots Society great...

Out of the blue member Julie Wartell from www.pubquest.com sent me maps she had designed and created showing where all our current PBS members live, both worldwide and USA distribution.

Currently we only have PDFs, but they will soon be available on www.pubquest.com if you want to link to them.

Otherwise you can download a PDF of each here: PBS World Map or PBS USA Map.

501 (c) 3 TAX EXEMPT STATUS UPDATE

We Love SponsorsWe submitted our 98-page 1023 application to the IRS on April 20, 2011. We have now been assigned an Agent, and we are working with her to fine-tune our application in order to comply with IRS rules. Having never done this before (but certainly learning a lot now), this has taken much longer than anticipated.

WE ARE SETTING BARLEY'S ANGELS FREE!

Barleys Angels Color This is the last time you will see this Barley's Angels logo.

(Except for some now-limited edition t-shirts we need to sell to raise money for scholarships. See t-shirt section below.)

But, the big news is that we are setting the Barley's Angels program FREE.

With communication from the IRS about our 501(c)3 application (see above), we are refocusing on our core mission of Education for Women Beer Professionals.

But BA is not dead! Think of Barley's Angels as a beautiful Phoenix being reborn from the beer kettle's flames. We can thank Christine Jump for Barley's Angels renaissance. Read more here.

WOMEN IN BEER HISTORIAN is new PBS HISTORIAN too!
Tara NurinCould the history of women's contribution to the early years of craft brewing slip away from us? What about the history of Pink Boots Society itself? How many national, regional, and non-USA meetings have taken place? Who was there?

These questions should be important to us. How few people out there know that women were the first brewers? If we aren't documenting our history (her-story) and contribution to the craft of fine beer, who will?

We all stand on each other's shoulders, each beer generation taking inspiration from, and going farther than, the previous generation of women beer professionals. Just imagine where women in beer could be in 100 years!

PBS is a young organization, but we hope to grow into a significant contributor to the story and people of great beer. Helping us document our history, and the history of the contribution of women to beer is our new PBS Historian, Tara Nurin from Pennsylvania. Read more about Tara and why the role of historian is so important.

It takes a TEAM to make Pink Boots Society great. Please help me in welcoming Tara Nurin: tara@eyesontheworld.us.

SCHOLARSHIP-FUNDRAISING PBS COLLABORATION BREW

NoCal Drakes 9-4-11

Did you hear about PBS's first fund-raising collaboration beer?

Alex Nowell of Drake's Brewing in California organized it, and brought bottles of Drakes Pink Boots Scholarship Saison to inspire us at our GABF meeting last September.

Read about it here, and consider organizing your own regional PBS scholarship fundraising collaboration brew event with your local Pink Booters.
