GABF NATIONAL MEETING & EDUCATIONAL SEMINAR

GABF LogoFriday September 30, 2011

11:30am - 2:30pm

Vine Street Pub
1700 Vine Street
Denver, CO 80206
(303) 388-2337

To keep it simple, you have three choices for lunch:

1. Skip it.

2. Bring Your Own.

3. Vegetarian Black Bean Chili with corn chips, sour cream & diced onion for $5 includes tip.

E-Vites are coming this week. When you RSVP, please mention if you are Yes for Chili, because we want to make sure Vine Street makes enough for all of us who want it. Please bring cash.

  • We can bring our own beers, no corkage fees. Do not ship any beers to Vine Street Pub. If you must ship your beer to Denver to share it, please contact Teri, as you will ship to her sister's house in Denver.
  • Meeting cost is $10 and includes pitchers of Vine Street's delicious beers, educational seminars & materials and gratuities.
  • Additional donations are appreciated. We know a lot of you are on a budget, so we want your education to be possible in spite of any budget constraints! But, if you think your value was higher, throw an extra donation in the registration desk pitcher on your way out the door.

PBS cloisonn pins will be for sale for $5. Please bring cash. $20 will get you everything.

SPEAKERS (Subject ot Change)

We have a really great line-up of speakers for our Seminar, including technical and non-technical talks:

  • Alex Nowell, Drakes Brewing Co.--PBS's First Scholarship-Fundraising Collaborative BrewTonya Cornett (with samples)
  • Tonya Cornett, Bend Brewing Co--Beer Recipe Design (panel)
  • Denise Jones, Moylan's Brewing--Beer Recipe Design (panel)
  • Judy Hoberman, Selling in a Skirt--Beer Sales & Marketing
  • Jennifer Helber, Lab Sciences, Etc., Inc.--Basic Sensory Training

Please note that Vine Street Pub really bent over backwards to help us with this meeting! Send your thank you notes and love letters to Paul Nashak, Managing Partner at the above address! All the event spaces downtown wanted $1,500+tax and tip (ie: $1,920 minimum fee), and the "cheap" space I had found bumped us yesterday. Vine Street is waiving it's room rental fee, corkage fees, is allowing us to bring our own food & beer, and is letting us use their event room as long as we need it if the seminars run late. They really rock! Be sure to support them whenever you are in Denver.

SCHOLARSHIP-FUNDRAISING PBS COLLABORATION BREW

NoCal Drakes 9-4-11

On September 4, the Northern California chapter of Pink Boots Society held their first meeting along with an all-day collaborative brew event. Member Alex Nowell of Drakes Brewing in San Leandro organized and hosted the collaborative brew & meeting. Gail Williams of Beer by BART documented the brew on YouTube http://youtu.be/4Uc6Kl33XwQ and on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/groups/beercommunity/. The video is especially fun to watch. The soundtrack music is Honeysuckle Rose.

The ladies brewed a Saison, and it is hoped that the proceeds of the sale of the beer will fund Pink Boots Society's first full scholarship. The malt was donated by Country Malt Group, and the malt selection included Great Western Malting's identity preserved California Select 2-Row malt, grown in the Tule Lake region of Northern California. The Saison yeast was donated by White Labs. Drakes Brewing Company donated the hops and use of their brewery.

This beer, dubbed Drake's Pink Boots Saison, will have at least three release parties:

  • October 12th at 6:00pm at Beer Revolution in downtown Oakland
  • October 14th at 4:00pm at Drakes Barrel House in San Leandro
  • and at Pi Bar in San Francisco, date TBD

The beer is described as a classic Saison with a California edge. It will be available throughout the San Francisco Bay Area beginning mid-October. We are hoping retailers will donate a portion of their revenue from this beer toward the PBS Scholarship fund as well. Please support Pink Boots Society and ask for Drake's Pink Boots Saison!

Alex Nowell will hand-bottle one case of this beer, and will bring it to our PBS National GABF meeting to share with fellow PBS members. More info on our PBS National meeting to follow.

We've been waiting for IRS approval of our 501(c)3 application since April. Once we have our 501(c)3 tax-exempt status, we will jump-start our long-awaited scholarship program!

For more information on the PBS Saison Collaboration Brew, please contact Kelsey Williams at Drakes Brewing Co. 510-568-2739 ext 10 or kelsey@drakesrewimg.com.
