Chairman's Welcome

Dear Friends:

Greetings from The Latino Coalition!

The first part of 2009 has been a very busy time for the Latino Coalition as we continue to establish partnerships and increase the value proposition to our members.  The highlight during this period was our annual Economic Summit and Business Matchmaking event.  More than 250 small businesses had an opportunity to talk to more than 30 federal agencies corporate sector buyers about procurement opportunities.  We also announced a number of new partnerships and initiatives which you can read about in this newsletter.  In short, we had a very successful event.

We also continue to successfully engage the Latino community throughout the country by hosting executive briefings.  Later this month we will be in the New Jersey/New York City area on  (6/17),then  San Francisco (7/14), Chicago (9/16) and Boston (10/15). I hope you will come join us.

The Latino Coalition is also pleased to welcome four new board members who bring tremendous knowledge and expertise to our organization.  They are also very committed to to the success of the Latino community.

Lastly, I want to thank our corporate and coalition partners.  Your support is invaluable to our organization and we look forward to continuing our work together this year and in the future.  Together with our partners and friends we continue to seek the empowerment of the Latino community so it reaches its full potential.

We hope you enjoy this edition of our newsletter.   Please write to us at the link below if you have any questions or comments.

TLC "On The Move"
TLC Economic Summit and Business Matchmaking Event a Great Success!
On May 6 The Latino Coalition hosted its annual Economic Summit and Business Matchmaking in Washington, DC.  The al-day event drew hundreds of participants from throughout the country.  The activities kicked off with briefings on health care and international business opportunities.  During lunch, participants heard from U.S. Senator John Thune and U.S. Senator John Cornyn, who talked about how the business community would be negatively impacted should the "card check" legislation pass, as well as the state of the U.S. economy and current Congressional Legislation agenda and its effect on the small business community.

The afternoon was dedicated to the very successful Business Matchmaking program where more than 250 small businesses accessed procurement opportunities with more than 30 federal and coporate sector buyers.

At the event, TLC announced new partnerships and relationships with SCORE, Women Impacting Public Policy, Empyrean Insurance Services and Newtek Business Services.  Also announced was the launch of the "ExitoUSA," an ongoing, multi channel direct marketing outreach program targeting over 1 million Hispanic owned small businesses nationwide

To the small business owners in attendance, the event proved to be an ideal forum for professional networking, quick assessment of issues impacting their sector and, most importantly, a face-to-face opportunity for new business growth. Alex Fortunati, owner of Los Angeles-based Support Services of America, Inc. summarized it best by saying, "As a small business owner, I need to be informed of the issues impacting me and I need to know the legislators who are working on my behalf; but, most importantly, I need the opportunities to earn contracts. The Latino Coalition has the mix right."

TLC Recently Joined American Task Force Argentina
In late January, The Latino Coalition formally announced its partnership with American Task Force Argentina (ATFA); a coalition of organizations united for a just and fair reconciliation of the Argentine government's 2001 debt default and subsequent restructuring (click here to view our announcement).  We are excited about the opportunity to work with ATFA and urge Members of the US House of Representative and Senate to make repayment of Argentina's debt a priority during the 111th Congress.  We urge you to contact your congressional representatives and tell them to make debt repayment a priority.  Argentina has set an extremely dangerous precedent in Latin America causing a domino effect which can be seen through Ecuador's recent debt default in December of 2008.  We hope that Congress understands the need for restrictions to be placed on debtors from wealthy and middle-income countries who remain in defiance of US court judgments or remain in default for over two years.

For more information about ATFA or ways to get involved, please visit www.atfa.org.

TLC Opposes Card Check
In April, TLC joined the National Black Chamber of Commerce and other business organizations at a press conference opposing the proposed Employee Free Choice Act, also known as "card check."
Among its many provisions, the proposed bill would change how unions are established in a business today by eliminating the secret ballot election.  Under card check, employees would simply have to sign a union authorization card to establish a union.
"The current system has worked well for many decades and offers employees many protections and rights," said TLC Chairman Hector V. Barreto.  "What we should be focusing on is giving businesses the flexibility to survive in the long term and create an environment where they can start creating jobs again, not creating additional government mandates."

Aetna Offers Health Insurance Through Multilingual Web Site
Finding affordable, high-quality health insurance can be difficult for people between the ages of 50 and 64. These individuals may not have access to health insurance from an employer and are also not yet eligible for Medicare.
To help solve this problem, Aetna has launched the AARP Essential Premiere health insurance plans which are endorsed by AARP. These plans, which have been available since early 2008, are available exclusively to AARP members 50-64 and their families in 31 states and Washington, D.C. There are a wide range of options so that consumers can choose the right plan for them at the right price.
Aetna recently launched a Spanish-language version of the product's website at www.aarphealthcare.com/aetna. On this site, individuals can find detailed information on the plan options, get a quote and even apply online. The Spanish-language version of the site can be viewed by clicking the "En Espanol" button in the upper right hand corner.
For more plan information, individuals can visit the website or call a company representative at 1-866-844-0888.
*Disclaimer - AARP does not make health plan recommendations for individuals.  You are strongly encouraged to evaluate your needs before choosing a health plan.
