 Success Stories of the Month:

When I was asked to use one word to describe our experience with Little Giant Steps, I said, "freeing!" I knew Joseph was smart, but how he daydreamed! He had a hard time focusing and when he did math, he jumped all over the page. It took him hours to get school work done. Also, he would have little bursts of frustration with his brothers and was hard to reason with. I was tired of always having to keep my eye on him and everything.
After the improvement in his brother's life, we decided to have Joseph join the program. Joseph really took the initiative and woke up early and did 2 hours of therapy before his other school work. It has been very freeing to see him change. At completion, he is reading at 10th grade level. He is actually enjoying algebra and can focus and complete his work twice as fast. He doesn't skip around anymore. I do not have to check on him constantly and he is trustworthy to get his schoolwork done. He gets along so much better with his brothers and will actually reason out situations. He is much calmer, yet fun and still our comedian.

Tip of The Month

ADD/ADHD

The neurodevelopmental model of evaluating how the brain receives, processes, stores and utilizes information is a powerful tool to evaluate underlying causes of distractibility. Limited space does not allow a detailed discussion of the theory and complete evaluation process using this model, but  below we will give parents a place to look for possible causes.

It is VERY important to understand brain plasticity. Psychological models assume the brain to be fixed and unchangeable. Since the 1940's, the true nature of the brain has emerged. The structure, function and even the chemistry of the brain is changed by specific stimulation. New brain cell connections grow, "rewiring" takes place, and brain chemistry actually changes with stimulation. Stimulation has a very specific meaning in this context. Specific stimulation is designed to impact the central nervous system which achieves improved function. With wisdom and knowledge, we can improve how brains function, from the severely brain injured; autistic; developmentally delayed; mentally retarded; learning disabled; dyslexic; and of course, the ADD or ADHD child.

Some possible causes of ADD and ADHD are: sensory issues (over or under sensitivity to touch, sound, visual stimulation, smells or tastes), underdeveloped processing (low ability to properly hold in sequence either visual or auditory information),and or storage inefficiencies ( the brain putting learned information in a place where it is difficult to retrieve due to mixed dominance) just to name a few possible culprits.

Each of these areas of development has a world of information behind it, and should be carefully evaluated as possibly influences on the inability of a child or adult to focus. They are potential causes of ADD symptoms. All of these areas can be remediated. Once causes of learning and distractibility problems are evaluated, a program can be designed to normalize these areas. Normal or superior function becomes possible.

There is one thing you can begin to work on TODAY! It has been sighted as one of the leading causes of inability to stay on task and focus.  AUDITORY PROCESSING.  See information below.

In addition to these "brain development" related reasons for the cause of ADD and ADHD, you would be well to consider the metabolic or chemical reactions that may cause symptoms.

All children benefit from a well balanced diet of real foods. Removing processed foods from the diet and limiting or eliminating sugar is often very beneficial - to all of us!  ~ Author, Key Ness, ND

AUDITORY PROCESSING

Everyone Can Benefit From Improving Their Auditory Processing Ability

AudProcessingBook

This booklet will give you tools to enhance most every area of your child's life. Auditory processing is a key factor in a child's neurological development and affects their ability to follow directions, comprehend, stay on task and attend. This 22-page booklet describes testing techniques as well as many activities for improving auditory processing.

Useful for ages 1 to 101

Take a snapshot of whether ones auditory and visual processing is  functioning at grade level.

Today we heard from Trudy Landis,ND (Austin), that she will be carrying out her role as educator, screener and workshop presenter to an International Workers Conference, as a part of ministering to missionaries and their families. There are expected to be approximately 400 adults and 400 children (family members) in attendance. Trudy has presented and ministered to this international group twice in Europe and once in the U.S. previously.

Later this year, she will be doing workshops for another international group in Bali,an Indonesian island located in the westernmost end of the Lesser Sunda Islands.

Supporting the dream of helping all children and their families to make learning more successful is a part of the Steps Of Hope ministry and we are proud to support the work of our colleague Trudy in all that she does.

Jan Bedell, Al Bias, and the balance of the board congratulate Trudy for her dedication to serving our brothers and sisters in the greater ministry of God.

You can help us help others at StepsofHope.com.

Stay tuned, as we build foundations. Praise be to God!
