Tip of The Month

Dyslexia and The Neurodevelopmental/Educational Approach

In America the ability to learn is becoming a pressing topic of conversation in our homes, schools, the workplace, and even government agencies. Our nation worries about the education of its citizens. Companies are concerned about their workers' ability to learn. School budgets and limited staff struggle under the weight of federal mandates and the learning challenges of their students.

Homeschool moms question their ability to teach. At the heart of the struggle is the debilitating diagnosis of dyslexia, affecting an estimated 5-15% or more of U.S. children, particularly boys. It has been called "the most frequently occurring learning disability and the most common disorder of childhood" (Richards

et al, 1999).

What Is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia, the word that strikes fear and dread in the hearts of thousands of parents each year, is a complicated and controversial diagnosis. Parents hear this devastating diagnosis and are typically told that teaching coping and compensating skills is the only answer. They see this proverbial "pile of bricks" loaded on their child's back and are told he has to carry it around for the rest of his life. A definition used to describe, identify and treat this malady was proposed by the World Federation of Neurology in the 1960s.

It states: "Dyslexia is a disorder manifested by difficulty learning to read despite

conventional instruction, adequate intelligence, and socio-culture opportunity."

(Catts & Kamhi p. 58). This definition focuses more on what dyslexia is not  rather than what it is. Nevertheless, it was used for decades to label hundreds of thousands of people. Read more......

Jan Bedell and the Staff of Little Giant Steps want to keep you informed about the good things that are happening through Steps of Hope (our sister agency, and non-profit ministry that supports our work with children and families. We welcome their monthly addition to our newsletter.

It has been a dream of Steps of Hope to bring a neuro-educational

after school program to our churches. Many children, due to sociological changes, have learning inefficiencies. In after school programs, the body of Christ can be trained in neurodevelopment to a make a difference that will last a lifetime. Our program addresses foundational issues to improve cognitive, processing, and memory function. Functional areas can be improved in a fun, dynamic and educational way. That's what we do for all the people we help! As Jan has often said, "Our program takes the individual from functioning akin to an Internet 'dial-up' connection to 'high-speed'. This results in academic success allowing each individual to reach his full potential! We, at Steps of Hope, are looking forward to one day having that after school program. You can help us help others at StepsofHope.com.

Stay tuned, as we build foundations. Praise be to God!

Inspiration From Our Family to Yours:

"The Early Learning Foundations program is amazing! Thank you! When we put our son back in public school after home schooling him for a couple of years, he started off right away needing to learn his math facts. We are really hanging in there thanks to this program. He is also being timed in these areas and this has always been difficult for him. His first test he made a 68%; but the last four tests - 100%!!!"  A very relieved mom in Texas.
