 Riddle Question:

The maker doesn't want it.

The user doesn't see it.
What is it?

 SEE ANSWER BELOW
Q: "My son has ADD/ADHD and the teacher suggested we medicate him, what do you think?"

A:  I think only a medical doctor should make recommendations about medicating anyone.

Having stated that, I assume you heard this teacher's recommendation, because she finds his behavioral symptoms difficult to manage in a classroom and her attempts to "teach" him are unsuccessful.

I know from years involvement with the Neuro-Educational Approach and having seen the effectiveness of working with the neuro-developmental aspects of the brain, these symptoms can and are eliminated by the application of brain-based techniques, activities and developmental programs. When the "root cause" of the insufficiency in the brain are reversed by literally rewiring those affected areas, then the symptoms of ADD/ADHD are remedied and the child can be restored to normal functional abilities.  They can have the advantage of the gaps being closed and discover their true functional potential and confidence.

So, from my perspective I see the option of giving a child medication to control behavioral symptoms as undesirable, and certainly not a first option.  It interferes with the child's normal course of development when they are "snowed" with drugs, not to mention the myriad of side effects that accompany the use of psychotropic drugs.  In my years of working with children and family services in mental health, I saw children's symptoms being alleviated in that they were often so stoned, they'd sit still and be more compliant. That made the teachers feel better and most parents didn't miss the hyperactivity either!  I also found when they reached puberty and had to go off the medications, these kiddos had not been building coping and self-control skills that would allow them to function in our society successfully.  These kids were not making good choices; they couldn't! They missed those vital lessons all must learn about getting along in others - about thinking before acting. Many of these children and early adolescents I followed for four and five years in my community.  Many, I truly believe, could be have had a much better life had they had the opportunity to have been on a neuro-developmental program, rather than drugs.  A few are still in prison.  That comment sounds harsh, but it's a reality.

Riddle Answer:

A Coffin!
 Children In Crisis

A few days ago I had a mother seek me out while in the grocery store.  She began asking questions about what Little Giant Steps did and how we help children.  I tried to be light-hearted by saying, "We set individuals free from learning disabilities!"  Her eyes continued to stare at me with no facial reaction whatsoever. Oh-oh, this was not a time to be light-hearted with this mother, as tears welled up in her eyes and the long awaited breaking of her stare caused a blink which sent a wall of water down her face.  I took my cart out of the checkout line, guided her away from others who were noticing her demise and suggested we go to my car and talk.

She sat in my car, wept and apologized in rapid succession.  All I could do was comfort her and hold her.  I told her if she needed to cry for the next hour, we'd sit here and do that, but she needed to let go of this hurt and worry right now.  I reminded her that God gave us tears to wash away the stress, anger, guilt and whatever feelings that were interfering with our ability to problem solve. With that permission, she cried a while longer, then as quickly as she had dissolved, she regained her composure.

I then introduced myself and she to me.  We laughed, when I said, "Hey I'm always up for new friendships ~ usually they cry after they know me, but it's okay.... we're starting with a clean slate, right?" As she attempted to profusely apologize... I said, "I'm  here, I figured God's got something in mind with this opportunity, so let's go forward, because I know both of us will have to be home in time to fix dinner!"  "Okay, so what's up?"

She gave me the details about her six year old son.  He's always been very hyperactive, impulsive, and while he had a good heart and could be a very loving little boy, he could also be a monster when things didn't go his way, or if he didn't get the relief from stressful situations.  He was hyper-sensitive to certain noises which many times made the whole family accommodate him, because he'd have such massive emotional meltdowns, they would have to leave the park, the church service, the programs or whatever activity he couldn't accommodate. She admitted most of the time they'd rather just not take him anywhere.

I assured her Little Giant Steps has had seventeen years of experience of working with children like her son.  I told her I thought first she needed to investigate our website. There she could educate herself about our modalities, philosophy and discover how we have assisted other families walk through this dark valley she feels so desperately about, and to come out on the other side with a son who can function in a normal range of existence.  I also told her she needed to determine after educating herself whether our program sounded like a good fit for her family.  They would have to decide whether they could make a commitment to work with their son on a daily basis.  The time needed to follow a program is not considerable, but it is a daily activity that must be incorporated into the life of a family.  If she and her husband agreed, and could get everyone on board, then I was confident they could begin to make a significant difference in her son's life.  I offered to give her a phone number of a client that had been in her place several years ago, and today had a son whose hyper-sensitivity issues were a part of his past history.  Instead of a grumpy, dissatisfied child with a raw side to his disposition, he is now a confident, high energy kid who is very successful and has even developed a wonderful sense of curiosity about the world in which he lives, instead of hating to encounter it.

We hugged, exchanged phone numbers and said a prayer.  My prayer continues to this day.  She says things are better and she's doing things she's learned from us.  I am sure things are much better if that's the case!

If you're seriously seeking a profound change, please order our free auditory and visual processing test kits, then follow the directions while incorporating the above information.  I've had parents report transformations in their children they didn't believe possible.  Now go have a fun and an inspiring school year with your child.
