 Riddle Question:

Why did the woman wear a helmet to the dinner table?
 SEE ANSWER BELOW
Q: "What Is The Difference Between the LGS program for Dyslexia and other programs out there?"

A:

I am so glad you asked that question!  There are so many views of dyslexia, it's symptoms, classifications, treatment varieties and approaches.  Where the LGS program differs is that we do not recognize the symptoms from a single source.  We know dyslexia is a multi-faceted and that a wide variety of areas are considered.  We look at the total person and what's going on with them specifically. Then, we focus on remediating their issues at the "root cause".  The brain holds the answer, or more accurately "changing the brain" is where the answer lies.  When neuro-pathways are underdeveloped, when communication between the brain and body are not efficient, when there are dominance issues in play, dyslexic "symptoms" appear.  When those issues are resolved, then the symptoms disappear, and as one of our 10 year-old clients proudly told his dad, "I don't have dyslexia anymore! I can do my work like everyone else."

Most especially what sets us apart: "We do not offer coping and compensating skills or strategies, as we have a better, lifetime, permanent solution given to the individual!"

      What's So Tricky About Phonics?

As I have been reading articles about the debate on phonics, I ran across a good explanation of this discussion by a BBC correspondent, Mike Baker:

"Phonics is an accepted part of the government's recommended approach to teaching literacy and few now argue over whether or not it should be used.

Instead the debate is about which type of phonics works best: analytic or synthetic. So how do they differ?

Analytic phonics is already in widespread use. It breaks down words into phonetic beginnings and endings.
Many teachers fear it does not suit all children's learning styles and argue it is so mechanistic it can destroy the joy of reading
Mike Baker

In the
jargon, this is called "onset and rime". So, for example, the word street would be broken into two parts: "str" and "eet".

By contrast, synthetic phonics is more prescriptive.

Before children are introduced to books, they have an intensive period of learning the 44 letter and letter-combination sounds in the English  language. They then use these to  reconstruct words. So, in our example of the word street, they would build it up from all  its constituent sounds: s- t- r- ee- t.

Advocates of synthetic phonics say children should be taught this method fast, first and only. It is this which makes the method controversial: it is, in effect, an all-your-eggs-in-one-basket approach. Many teachers fear it does not suit all children's learning styles and argue it is so mechanistic it can destroy the joy of reading."

What really amazes me is that these controversial issues, with many political overtones, are missing a critical piece of the phonics problem. What these theorists, with all their expertise and experience fail to recognize (many are not informed) that there are important and vital fundamentals that rest with the basic steps of development where phonics are concerned.

This piece of information is what we've labeled as, "The Best Kept Secret In Education".  The fact is that without the development of at least a 5 to 6 digit auditory skill level ability being firmly established, the individual simply cannot succeed with phonics due to their inability to hold pieces of information in short term memory.  If they can't hold it in short term memory, they cannot manipulate, nor store it in long term memory.

Yes, there will always be those who think the best you can do is to teach coping and compensating strategies; but we know better! Through the neuro-educational techniques the phonics issue can be resolved for a lifetime and the debate over what is best, synthetic or analytic, becomes a mute point.
