Q: "I know my child needs help, but we don't think we can afford your services. What are our options?"
A: I am so glad I can respond to this question. First, I would suggest you check our calendar for the screenings we are doing around your area. A screening can help you understand what's going on with your child and why they may not be academically up to par. Now, this is NOT a full blown evaluation. It's merely a "snapshot" using some quick indicators that may be hampering your child from his or her learning potential. There is a parent seminar following the screenings where the neuro-educational specialist will provide your child's test results, valuable teaching and some possible options for you. The screenings have been discounted to $15.00. So, take advantage!! You can come away with working knowledge of your options. It will help you to decide what, if any, further steps you may want to explore.
Often, parents know more than they give themselves credit for when it comes to their children. Some parents know instinctively their child needs a full professional evaluation. In that case, we suggest if finances are a serious concern, you start looking for a sponsor. It could be a family member, a church, or a group of individuals who do good works for children. Don't leave any stone unturned. You need to seek a benefactor for your child and then have that benefactor make a donation (tax deductible) to Steps Of Hope in the name of your child. A scholarship for your child will be established. In fact, they can make that donation right on the LGS store! We would then contact you about the sponsor or benefactor and schedule an evaluation for your child. All of the details required for an evaluation are available on our website under the "Evaluations" tab.
If you are a homeschooler, the Home School Legal Defense Association, has grants available to their members for our evaluations for children in need. Membership is required to participate and make application for assistance.
The Developmental Foundations Program (mentioned below), was designed to help those struggling with the cost of a full evaluation, but wanted to get their child started in the right direction by changing the basics of brain organization and learning deficits. For some children, a program like this is all they need. If you have a child with greater involvement, this will help to establish them on the right path, and you can seek or save for the professional intervention while completing this program. You and your child will grow immeasurably by doing the Developmental Foundations Program.
The important thing is that you do something! A learning disability is not a life sentence! There are many things that can be done to intervene and save them from a life filled with frustration and failure. You have everything to gain for them and nothing to lose.

Top Ten 2010 List
1. Your Time. There is nothing as valuable as your time whether you are giving time to your spouse, child, family or church. Time with your loved ones has healing properties if you are truly invested in them (whether on program or not!) Also, find time this year to invest in yourself. Whether you need time to relax, exercise, or you need to learn something that fills your soul and daily life. Take the time to keep a balance. A dry well can't give water.
2. Start Your Bucket List. It's a good idea for you to think about the things you want to do in your life, before you "kick the bucket!" Only if you plan, can you taste those areas of life that draws your special interest. Some things may be exceptional, others small, but don't miss the fact, for you, they hold great meaning. Put that list together this year.
3. Hone Your Talent. Regardless of what your special gift is, it has value to you and those around you. Your talent is important. (Never under-value your gifts.)
4. Give From Your Heart. Only you have the thoughts that come from your heart. Let that uniqueness be reflected throughout the year ahead.
5. Keep Your Eyes On The Goal. For many of our clients who are working diligently on helping their child reach their God-given academic potential, please remember your work will succeed and this part of your journey will come to an end. I am always amazed when the children reach their grade-appropriate functional level. We tell them it is time for them to graduate from program. They typically act surprised at first, then they beam with confidence as they know they can do the work and they've earned the reward. The struggle to achieve leaves them equipped with life skills of knowing they can and have acquired the ability to "overcome" unfavorable odds. Always keep your eyes on the goal. They will go on by themselves to achieve more and more. For many of us, we've seen our children achieve things we never conceived of, nor believed they might do.
6. Decide What You Can Afford. Over-extending yourself this year needs to be nixed whether it is financial or life choices. Often you can be most resourceful when you must come up with something out of your imagination. Our favorite motto, "If you keep doing the same thing, you are going to get the same results." So, try some thing new this year. Start small, but evaluate each month the new technique you have tried. If it works stay with it. If it doesn't, try something else.
7. Be An Example. Living a good life with values set forth by Christ will produce more in your life and for those around you than anything you might ever say.
8. Give Clear Direction. Think before you speak and clarify what you wish to accomplish. That is a blessing to all concerned.
9. Give Second Chances. You and I have been given a second chance by Christ's loving sacrifice. Now we can pass on His lesson to others. This is an effort in mercy and understanding which all of us mortals need.
10. Give Hope. When someone has lost hope...that is when you get the opportunity to share God's word and restore them.
All of us at LGS wish you a very happy and prosperous year in 2010! |
