Now we celebrate the waning harvest.  The daylight becomes more precious, and our ability to appreciate each golden drop of sun heightens. We use this time to prepare for winter's chill. Soon many will gather with their families for feasting, good cheer, and sometimes great stress (Female Ground!  Blow Pictures! Find Your Amusement!)

We invite you to experience training in practical meditation that can change your daily life, the lives of others and your experience of the world.

My Understanding of the System

Todd Williams

On June 2, 2007 I attended Gloria's Level 1 class, on July 21 I attended John's Health & Happiness Class and on September 8th I attended John's Level 1.  These three classes and John and Gloria's book have been my introduction to the System.  This is how I understand it all today:

1)     To fully engage this System I accept my choice to sincerely and authentically commit to becoming more Aware by playfully processing all feedback with amusement and/or curiosity.

2)     The level of my commitment to becoming more Aware is directly proportional to how much responsibility I accept for myself.  This means accepting all experiences (no matter how I see them or what I feel about them) as valuable and worthwhile feedback.

3)     The tools for the System assist me to stay conscious and say Hello to whatever shows up in my life.  My focus is to be on what I do and how I respond to each life experience and not on attaching to a judgment or expectation about the experience.

4)     The tools for the System assist me with building the muscles to establish a natural and automatic ability to respond by saying hello to all energies.  For me this means establishing reminders to use the tools in real time teachable moments.  To keep from getting serious about this or becoming hard on myself, I also remind myself that I am doing my best in every situation with what I know and where I am.  I only become better with practice and through my consistent use of the tools.

Example:  In the past if a person was telling me their story and going into high drama and trauma, I would tune-out and try to block the energy.  All this did was piss the person off and leave them feeling that I didn't care.  Now I ground, go to the center of my head and gently send back their energy and create and destroy roses to de-story what I take in.  This keeps me present for the other person and allows me to focus my awareness on what is being triggered in me without giving my power away.

Example: When I am driving I ground, own my space and set a rose to where I am going.  I clear my identity energy or breathe in knowledge and wisdom if I am cut off, tale-gated, etc.  I also ground when merging into traffic so I have a nice, safe space to get in a lane.  This creates a much more peaceful and easy driving experience and also seems to have a positive impact on my passengers, especially kids!

5)     These tools are very powerful and become stronger the more I use them.  They are tools to create more Life in our lives.  The tools give me a way to process (discover the meaning behind) what shows up so I am not stuck on what happens or how it happens.  To achieve Awareness there is no right or wrong or good or bad only consciousness or unconsciousness.

6)     The process of discovery will be accelerated to the degree that I let go of what it looks like and how it shows up and be open to where it takes me.  It isn't so much about what happens or how it happens, but what I do with it and how I respond and use the information to bring more joy and meaning to my life.

It takes multiple exposures to the System to get it.  It is impossible to repeat a class.  Each class and every opportunity to learn finds me in a new space ready to move on to a different understanding of the tools and this tradition for healing.

Book Review - Autobiography of a Yogi

By:  Paramhansa Yogonanda

1946 First Edition

Review by Patty Fish

Autobiography of a Yogi is a book that John and Gloria had recommended we read as part of the October Intensive, 2007.  I bought the book prior to attending the Intensive, but didn't begin reading it until afterwards.  At first glance, I thought it would be another read like the Seth books - I can only read a small number of pages when reading the Seth material because they are so intense!  But to the contrary, I could hardly put the book down.  It is the autobiography of Paramhansa Yogananda, a great Indian master of yoga who successfully accepted his dharma  revealed to him by his master, Sri Yukteshwar.  That dharma was to bring the teachings of Lahiri Mahasaya from the East to the West (America) through teaching Kriya Yoga.  He founded the Yoga Institute of Encinitas, California and lived and taught in the United States from 1920 until his passing in 1952.  He is also the founder of the Self-Realization Church of All Religions.

The book helped me to put a name and a history to the faces of many of the pictures that are brought to the Intensives, and their significance.  Lahiri Mahasaya was the disciple of Babaji, and guru of Sri Yukteswar.  Paramhansa Yogananda's parents became disciples of the great master Lahiri Mahasaya, and thus was one of the first saintly influences in his life. Paramhansa  Yogananda's great guru was Sri Yukteswar, disciple of Lahiri Mahasaya.  John has channeled both Lahiri and Yukteswar in my readings with him.  Mataji is mentioned in one account in the book as Babaji's sister.  We all know that John channels Mataji.  In the book, Sri Yukteswar gives a fascinating description of life after death, and delves into several of the seven higher planes of consciousness that is a part of John's teachings.

The book is filled with the stories of miracles and Paramhansa Yogananda's first hand eye witness of the miracles of the some great Hindu saints.  Per the book's inside flap, "The subtle but definite laws by which yogis perform miracles and attain complete self-mastery are explained with a scientific clarity."  There are many wonderful pictures depicted of the gurus and saints, and of Paramhansa Yogananda's family, ashrams visited and his travels.  Parts of this book brought me to tears.  It has whet my appetite to learn more about the Hindu religion and for possible travels to the great spiritually rich land of India.

Culinary Delight: White Bean and Sweet Potato Enchiladas from the Intensive Potluck
Recipe adapted from the Ann Arbor People's Food Co-op with changes by Violeta

Bean mix:

2 cans white beans, drained and rinsed

¼ tsp cumin

¼ tsp black pepper

1/8 tsp onion powder

¼ tsp paprika

½ tsp garlic, minced (I use the bottled variety)

¼ tsp chili powder

Sweet potato mix

4 cups sweet potatoes, peeled, diced and cooked until tender

½ teaspoon garam masala (look for it in the specialty spices but McCormick also

  has it)

2 tsp sugar

½ tsp salt

Pinch of cayenne or to taste

½ -1 tsp lime juice (I sometimes use lemon if that's what I have on hand)

2 tbsp water (more if the mix is too stiff)

3 cups onions, sliced, and sautéed until golden brown with about 2 tbsp oil.

Salsa

1/3 - ½ cup bottled salsa

15 oz can diced tomatoes (petit diced are nice)

For enchiladas:

2 packages flour tortillas 10" size (can use whole wheat if you'd like)

12 oz shredded Monterey Jack cheese

  1. Place beans and spices in food processor with spices and process until almost smooth (I like to leave a few pieces in it for texture).  Remove to a bowl and set aside.  Scrape out bean mixture with spatula but no need to wash the processor bowl.
  2. Mix together sweet potatoes, cooked and cooled onions, spices, water, lime juice in food processor.  Carefully add more water or lime juice if mixture feels too stiff or won't easily process.
  3. Mix salsa and tomatoes and set aside.
  4. To make enchiladas: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.  Grease or spray with oil the bottom of shallow 9x13 baking pan.  Take a tortilla, spread about 1-2 tbsp of bean mix then top with 2-3 tbsp sweet potato mix.  Roll and place into the pan.  Continue with about 9 more tortillas (about 10 will fit into a 9x13 pan).  Spread salsa mix over the tortillas and then sprinkle with cheese. Bake until heated through about 30-35 minutes if ingredients are warm, 45-50 if cold.  This can be made ahead and kept in the refrigerator.  To make sure it is heated through, use a thermometer to check that internal temp reaches at least 165 degrees.

Below is a wonderful poem Audrey Hepburn wrote when asked to share her "beauty tips".

It was read at her funeral years later. . .

~

For attractive lips, speak words of kindness.

For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people.

For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry.

For beautiful hair, let a child run his/her fingers through it once a day.

For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone.

People, even more that things, have to be restored,

Renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed;

Never throw out anyone.

Remember, if you ever need a helping hand,

You will find one at the end of each of your arms.

As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands;

one for helping yourself, and the other for helping others.

If you share this with another woman,

Something good will happen.

You will boost another woman's self esteem,

And she will know that you care about her.

Level I-II Practices in Ann Arbor - future changes:   The monthly, second Tuesday Level 1-2 practice session that is held in Ann Arbor and run by John, will soon change location and broaden its availability.  John has been investigating the possibility for students to phone in during a group practice session.  Those in far away cities, or those simply unable to come to the Ann Arbor Level 1 practices will be able to phone in a similar manner to the Wednesday phone in classes.  At this point, questions will only be taken by those physically in attendance.  We will continue to look into the possibility of receiving email questions for later sessions.  More information will be provided in the next newsletter for a possible first session in November.

Longer Level I-II Practices in Ann Arbor:   There have been requests in Ann Arbor for a longer Level 1-2 practice, possibly held on weekends.  After a discussion with John, I have set up three dates in the next three months.  These practice sessions will be lead by me and will be 4 hours long on Sunday afternoons for a cost of $15.  They will be held from 1-5pm at Gretchen's House, 2625 Traver Road in the smaller building to the left at the top of the hill. The cost for this 4-hour session will be $15.  We will have a major clearing meditation, several exercises, some discussion, and Q&A with breaks throughout. At each session I will bring in exercises that John has recently used.  If you are interested, please let me know by RSVP to my email address:  violetaviviano@ameritech.net.   This new schedule for the rest of the year is as follows:

  • Sunday, December 2, 1-5pm

Level I Class - December 1 and 2:   The next Level I that I will offer in Ann Arbor will be held on the weekend of December 1 and 2.  I am hoping to dovetail this Level I class with the Sunday afternoon Level I practice.  By doing this I am hoping to accomplish several things.  First, Level I students will have an opportunity to meet other students in John's system.  Secondly, the students will have an opportunity to participate in a practice session.  By this juncture in the class, students are ready to engage in a full clearing meditation which is where the practice session will start. The only thing that I plan to change is the length of the class on Saturday.  The schedule for this class will be as follows:

Saturday, December 1, from 9-5pm - Class with an hour or so for lunch

Sunday, December 2, from    9-12pm - Class

                                            12-1pm - Lunch

Foundations in Psychic Development I: Boundaries and Flow

Learning how to be aware of, and how to transform our aura transforms our love and life experiences. In this seminar, every exercise furthers the development of at least one of the two basic abilities: finding one's own psychic energy (one's own authentic impulses); and clearing blocks to progress. Students learn how to ground and run energy, how to clear blocks, how to find, clear, and repair the chakras, and how to explore deeply the entire volume and frequency range of the aura (called the layers of the aura).

Foundations in Psychic Development II:

Space, Seniority, Neutrality and Spiritual Fuel

In this two-day workshop, we will develop a deep understanding of how we use our own aura space to create our reality. We begin with psychic explorations that familiarize us with our space, and how we subdivide it through resistance to others. We can then learn to create our aura space through awareness rather than resistance.  In the resulting neutrality, we become able to create our reality less and less through resistance to another, and more and more from our own spiritual fuel.

Prerequisite: Level I

Foundations in Psychic Development III: Seeing Auras

In this two-day workshop we will explore the psychic anatomy of clairvoyance, or seeing auras; how to activate and empower this perception; and several ways to use this ability in making decisions, in healing oneself and others, and in deepening one's understanding of oneself and others.  We will then move to actually doing comprehensive, systematic psychic readings in partnership with fellow students. Participants usually find they can easily increase their ability to perceive genuinely useful aura energies in just this one weekend, and that they are well started on the adventure of a lifetime.

Prerequisite: Level II

Foundations in Psychic Development IV: Channeling

Learn the clairvoyant mechanics of skillful channeling -- how to prepare your space for channeling by running an ever clearer white light vibration while still owning and governing who and what occupies your space. This requires clearing psychic agreements, karma, and thought forms that distort both ordinary awareness and channeling.

Prerequisite: Level III
Health and Happiness: Connect with Your Body!
"Avoid fried meats which angry up the blood," said baseball great, Satchel Paige.  This amazing athlete was so in touch with his body that he could actually sense the health, or lack of health, of his blood stream.  We also can begin tracking aspects of our body not normally available to conscious awareness such as: where in our body do we have imbalances of heat, cold, damp, etc. as spoken of in Chinese medicine; where is a there a blood vessel that could use a healing; or what "hormones" can we mentally increase or decrease for better health or mood, and how we can, in fact, influence their flow and amount.

Developing such an awareness allows us to heal ourselves and others more effectively.  Great healings can be done without this kind of physical awareness by using energies of higher planes, and in other seminars we study how to access and use those higher plane energies.  However, something unique and richly meaningful is added when we stretch our awareness and gain that intimacy and direct experience of the body in its own realm.

As part of this overall exploration of the body in its natural realm, we will explore how different emotional states like sadness, hunger, joy and happiness arise in the brain and body, and begin to explore how we can alter these states, to some extent, intentionally.  One benefit of developing such an awareness is that we become less rigid in responding to emotional states, we become more creative, appreciative and playful with our emotions.
This seminar will allow you to begin to develop a skill set over time to connect with and benefit your body in ever deeper, more meaningful and more joyful ways.

Prerequisite: Level I
The Grounding Cord, teachers and affiliates of John Friendlander and Gloria Hemsher will never share, distribute or sell your name, email address or other contact information. We are committed to your online privacy.

We encourage recipients of the newsletter to pass it on to anyone who might find the information valuable. It is our hope to find more people and their energies to include in our practice mediations. Not only will it be of benefit to the new members, it will add to the group energy as a whole. We welcome you to join us!
