Growing Healthy Churches ...

May 2011

Rivers Crossing - Kings Mills OH

We are so thankful for what God did at Rivers Crossing on Easter. Our people absolutely bought into the vision of inviting their unchurched friends to hear the gospel presented and Christ's resurrection celebrated. We broke our all time high in attendance with 877 in two services (our previous high was 748 on Christmas Eve) and had 45 salvations and 8 baptisms. It was a wonderful day and we celebrate it with our GHC/GHCN family.

Easter Bunny Flys Into Town

Right at the last minute
, after much hard work and straight up miracles from above, we were given permission  from the County of Maui to pull off something that had never happened in Hawaii before.   You guessed it...a helicopter flying with the Easter bunny, straight into our local football stadium to drop thousands of eggs.   This gave our outreach event that WOW factor!   We have to tell you that pulling this event off stretched our little one year old church like never before.   "Why all of this," you may be asking;

1.)   To celebrate in local style, Jesus conquering death, and what that means for us

2.)   To celebrate The Awakening Churches first birthday

3.)   To draw a large crowd with the intention of helping people rededicate/surrender their lives to Christ.

Easter for us this year has been the culmination of the last 8 years of planting seeds.  Marin county is a funky place with less than 2% of our population attending anything like a church service.  Over the last 8 years it has been very, very difficult to plant a church that feels indigenous to our county.

When Lyn and I arrived here we were ready to "do it right" and really get a flagship church planted the way we had in other places...that didn't work.  It took years of listening to our culture here and to God in order to form our hearts to the point of effectiveness.  We have been through 8 years of painful ministry some of it self-inflicted, some of it from God and I'm sure some from the enemy.

Through all of this we have tried our best to maintain an attitude of staying in it until we could see what was really forming here.  It became clear that normal church planting paradigms would not work here...at least they didn't in our case, and that we would have to see and hear new things from God in order to do what we felt he had brought us to do.

I have felt over the years that I have been a disappointment to GHC and to the "deal" I made with them when we first arrived.  At one point I almost left...but it became clear to me that what we needed to do was stay and do the work that we needed to do in order to see the fruit that we longed to see.

Well, very long story short, this Easter felt like something happened that was significant in our church and community.  We had two services that were filled to capacity and nearly standing room only.  We saw people that were on the fringe step up and become part of the team.  We saw people that others had been praying for show up and sense the presence of God.

We say team members who have been serving faithfully sense an encouragement from finally seeing some long awaited fruit.  I am reminded of sowing and reaping and it feels like with all of the plating that has been happening over the last years, God has allowed us to do some amazing picking over the last few weeks.

In other contexts I would not consider 385 people on an Easter Sunday a success, but here in Novato, after all that we have seen and been through, these 385 people were like 5,000 to me.  We have learned what it is like to plant a church in a postmodern, post Christian context and although it is nothing like planting in other places, it has formed Christ in us.

I am grateful that God never gives up on anyone!

With Respect,

We had a great day Easter Sunday.  We started the day with a potluck breakfast. During the breakfast we did a Easter Egg Hunt for the kids.  We had an early service start, and just rocked the place with our worship team putting on their powdered wigs(figuratively now) and blowing the roof off with our keyboard cranked and set as a pipe organ.  My wife Linda accompanied on the Grand Piano and we did a good old fashioned, High church worship set.  We then baptised 6 BRAND NEW believers and finished our morning in the Word, I preached on "Gardens" a take off on 4 significant gardens in the bible, from Eden to Olives. We had over 130 in attendance.  It was a great day!!!

Blessings!

We are doing a 4 part series with a billboard on the main highway entitled, "God Hates Religion Too".

Check it out at www.voxchurch.com

VOX is a brand new church that launched on September 26, 2010, with Sunday morning services from 10:00-11:15 am. We believe that God is using the VOX project to start a disciple making movement in the north-eastern Detroit Metro area. VOX Church will Gather as one (weekend worship gatherings), Grow in groups (small groups meeting in homes), and Go on mission (serving the community).

Come just as you are!  Jeans, suits, whatever!  We don't care!

Because of the Gospel, VOX Church exists to overcome religion through Christ-centered relationships, resulting in changed lives!
