AMHERST, Mass.- The acclaimed duo of soprano Sarah Pelletier and pianist Lois Shapiro will celebrate the poetry of Emily Dickinson in a recital of modern song settings on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in Buckley Recital Hall at Amherst College. The concert will include Aaron Copland's classic cycle, "Twelve Poems of Emily Dickinson," as well as premiere performances of new Dickinson cycles by the distinguished California composer Ross Bauer and Amherst College associate professor of music Eric Sawyer.
The Bauer work, "The Waters Wrecked the Sky," sets five poems offering a sometimes bracing perspective towards the forces of nature. Sawyer's cycle, "Jehovah's Watch," draws on six poems connected to time and disruptions of time's rhythms. Combined with the familiar Copland cycle, the program offers a broad perspective of modern musical approaches to Dickinson's poetry.
The concert will be preceded by a symposium on Dickinson and Music, held at 4:30 p.m. in Room 3 of Arms Music Center, with Amherst College professor of English Karen Sanchez-Eppler, joined by Pelletier, Shapiro, Bauer and Sawyer. The concert and symposium are sponsored jointly by Amherst College Music Department, the Emily Dickinson Museum and Live In Concert, Inc.
Praised by the Boston Globe for possessing "virtues of voice, intelligence and musicianship... with purity of tone and expression," soprano Sarah Pelletier has recently been featured at Spoleto Festival USA, Bard Music Festival, and Aldeburgh Festival. Past seasons include a solo recital on the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage and performances with New Jersey Symphony, Princeton Symphony, San Francisco Bach Choir, New England Philharmonic, Emmanuel Music, and Princeton Festival Opera. Pianist Lois Shapiro is a New York Concert Artists Guild Award winner and highly sought-after soloist and collaborative pianist. She has appeared throughout the U.S. and abroad in concerts ranging from 18th-century period-instrument performances to premieres, and has recorded on the Afka, Channel Classics, Centaur, MLAR, and Pierrot labels. She teaches at Wellesley College, where her piano trio Triple Helix has been Artist-in-Residence Ensemble since 2000.
