This lively exploration of Dickinson's power to inspire composers begins with a symposium on Dickinson and music. Karen Sanchez-Eppler, professor in the Amherst College English Department, moderates a discussion with the performers, and composers Eric Sawyer and Ross Bauer.
7 - 8 p.m. Concert
Buckley Recital Hall, Arms Music Center, Amherst College (on Route 9).
The song recital by Sarah Pelletier and Lois Shapiro will feature Aaron Copland's classic Twelve Emily Dickinson Poems along with the world premieres of two new works: The Waters Wrecked the Sky by Ross Bauer and Jehovah's Watch by Amherst College music faculty Eric Sawyer. This program is presented by Live in Concert and the Emily Dickinson Museum.

Alice Fulton: A Poetry Reading

Alice Fulton is recipient of a 2011 American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature. Among her other honors is the Bobbitt Prize for Poetry from the Library of Congress. Her work has strongly acknowledged the influence of Emily Dickinson's poetry. Currently Ann S. Bowers Professor English at Cornell, she is the author of eight books of poetry as well as recent work published in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Antioch Review, Fifth Wednesday, and Kenyon Review. Join poetry readers for an advance look at Alice Fulton's poetry in preparation for her reading for the Emily Dickinson Museum on Saturday, November 12, at 3 p.m. The discussion will be facilitated by Margaret Freeman. She will begin with excerpts from the work of scholar Cristanne Miller and from Alice Fulton herself about Fulton's engagement with Dickinson's poetry. From there, the group will look at some of Fulton's own poetry and consider the ways in which Dickinson has influenced her as a poet.

The Emily Dickinson Museum: The Homestead and The Evergreens is dedicated to educating diverse audiences about the poet's life, family, creative work, times, and enduring relevance, and to preserving and interpreting the Homestead and The Evergreens as historical resources for the benefit of scholars and the general public.
The Emily Dickinson Museum is owned by the Trustees of Amherst College and overseen by a separate Board of Governors. The Museum is responsible for raising its own operating and capital funds.
