Emily Dickinson Poetry Walk

Poetry Walk 2010 The Emily Dickinson Museum will sponsor the annual Emily Dickinson Poetry Walk and Open House on Saturday, May 15, at 1 p.m. The Walk marks the anniversary of the poet's death (on May 15, 1886) with readings of her poetry at six historic sites in Amherst. The event is free and open to the public. This year's Walk will feature Dickinson poems that refer to flowers, gardens, landscape, and other aspects of nature.

The Poetry Walk will begin at 1 p.m. in the Homestead garden and proceed through Amherst, stopping at sites significant in Dickinson's life. Anyone who would like to read one of the poems should arrive at the Homestead at 12:45 p.m. to receive an assignment; poems will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

After the Poetry Walk, the Museum will host an Open House from 3 to 4 p.m. The Homestead and The Evergreens will be open for self-guided tours during that time, and guides will be on hand to answer questions. Admission is free.

  • Celebrating Emily Dickinson's Words

More than a hundred people gathered at the Jones Library on Saturday, April 10, for "Celebrating Emily Dickinson's Words," a National Poetry Month event co-sponsored by the Emily Dickinson Museum and the Jones Library. Visitors from as far away as Cape Cod and the Berkshires came to read, discuss, write, and respond to poetry.

Throughout the day, participants contributed their favorite lines of poetry to a banner that will serve as a permanent celebration of Dickinson's words. The Museum's program coordinator Nan Fischlein, whose expert crew of volunteers developed the banner, noted that "the Community Poetry Banner was intended to create a community interpretation and celebration of poetry, inspired by Emily Dickinson's words. Along the way, the concept melded with the image of nineteenth-century crazy quilts and album quilts."

The finished banner, as well as individual fabric pennants made by children, will hang at the Jones Library through the end of April and will be exhibited at the Emily Dickinson Museum in May.

Special thanks to the Jones Library staff, Amherst College professor Karen Sanchez-Eppler's Emily Dickinson seminar, Maureen Buchanan Jones of Amherst Writers and Artists, and our many volunteers for making the day such a celebration!

    Cultural Landscape Report

The Emily Dickinson Museum is pleased to announce the completion of a Cultural Landscape Report, or CLR, for the three acres shared by the two Dickinson family homes. The goal of the CLR is to determine how the Emily Dickinson Museum landscape appeared and functioned during the Dickinson family's occupation of the property, and to develop a phased plan to stabilize, restore, rehabilitate, and/or reconstruct the landscape to reflect this period. To meet this goal, Martha Lyon Landscape Architecture, LLC, based in Northampton, Mass., produced a detailed account of the historical development of the property from untouched forest to its occupation by the Dickinson family to its present-day three-acre configuration.

The CLR concludes with a series of recommendations which range from clearing invasive plant species to restoring Emily Dickinson's and Susan Dickinson's gardens to redefining the Homestead barnyard. One of these projects, replanting the hemlock hedge and reconstructing the adjacent fences, was completed just last fall and has dramtically changed the appearance of the Dickinson property.

It owes its success in large measure to the generous encouragement of its many dedicated friends and supporters.

Take Action! You Can Help Save America's Treasures

Homestead The ceiling repairs at Emily Dickinson's home speak volumes about the challenges and importanct of preserving our nation's historic sites. The Save America's Treasures program, which helped to fund the exterior restoration of the Homestead, the Museum's Master Plan, and infrastructure improvements, is threatened by proposed budget cuts that would eliminate this important preservation funding. The National Trust for Historic Preservation recently featured the Emily Dickinson Museum on its blog as an example of protecting our national heritage. You can read more about this program and what you can do to help protect it at the website www.preservationnation.org/treasures.
