Get Your Tickets to The Belle of Amherst Now!
The Emily Dickinson Museum presents a
benefit performance of William Luce's
critically acclaimed play, The
Belle of Amherst with actress Barbara
Dana at 7:00 pm, Thursday, March 11, at
the Kirby
Theater at Amherst College. After her
performance Ms. Dana will hold a discussion
with the audience.
Barbara Dana is dedicating her one-woman performance to actress Julie Harris who, in Dana's words, "is my acting idol and has been since I was a girl and aspiring actress." Ms. Harris played the title role in The Belle of Amherst when it opened on Broadway at the Longacre Theatre on April 28, 1976. She and director Charles Nelson Reilly brought the play to the Kirby Theater in Amherst the same year. In 1977, Miss Harris won her fifth Tony Award as Best Actress for her portrayal. Barbara Dana is an award-winning author, screenwriter, and actor both on stage and in film. Her Broadway stage credits include Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and William Inge's Where's Daddy? Ms. Dana has appeared in films and television programs including the PBS production of An Enemy of the People and the daytime drama As the World Turns. A passionate reader and scholar of Emily Dickinson, Ms. Dana is the co-editor of Wider than the Sky: Essays and Meditations on the Healing Power of Emily Dickinson and the author of the 2009 novel for young adults, A Voice of Her Own: Becoming Emily Dickinson. Her work as a writer gives Dana a unique perspective on portraying Dickinson on stage: "What actor gets to study their 'character' for 10 years before they play it? What a gift!" Reservations are strongly suggested. Preferred seating is available for $50 per ticket; general admission tickets are available for $25 for adults, and $15 for students. For tickets and information contact info@emilydickinson museum.org or call 413-542-5311.

Emily Dickinson, Household Work and Poetry: An Afternoon of Domesticity
On Saturday, March 27, at 2:00 p.m., the Emily
Dickinson Museum will host a free
lecture and discussion with authors Aife
Murray and Daneen
Wardrop, on Emily
Dickinson, Household Work and Poetry: An
Afternoon of Domesticity. The
program will be
held at
the Amherst Woman's Club,
35 Triangle Street, Amherst (next door to
the Homestead).
The program brings together the authors of two new books that focus on intriguing yet overlooked aspects of Emily Dickinson's world. In Maid as Muse: How Servants Changed Emily Dickinson's Life and Language (2010), Aife Murray reveals how domestic workers in the Dickinson household influenced the poet's cultural outlook, artistic subject, and even poetic style. In Emily Dickinson and the Labor of Clothing (2009), Daneen Wardrop explores Dickinson's connections, literal and metaphoric, to the fabrics and fashions of her time. Both scholars portray a poet who, though often depicted as an isolated recluse, was deeply immersed in and influenced by the culture and customs of her time. During the program, Murray and Wardrop will share highlights of their individual research and participate in a moderated discussion about the domestic and artistic spheres in which Dickinson lived. Several Dickinson poems, including "The Spider as an Artist," will be featured. Refreshments and a book-signing for both authors will follow. For more information, please contact the Emily Dickinson Museum at 413-542-8429 or 413-542-2034.

Museum Opens March 31st!
The Emily Dickinson Museum is
buzzing with activity preparing for the
opening of the Museum on March 31st. We're
rearranging artifacts, stocking the gift
shop shelves, and the guides have been busy
reading the newest Dickinson literature and
perfecting their tours. Most important,
construction
crews are working quickly to complete ceiling repairs
at the Homestead. Replacement of many
ceilings
at the Homestead has improved our knowledge
about
how Emily Dickinson's home appeared during her
lifetime. And we look forward to opening the
doors to her beloved home on March 31 and
sharing
this information with our visitors.
To make a special donation
to support repair of the Homestead ceilings,
