Meet-the-Filmmakers Screening of "The Poet In Her Bedroom" & Slideshow talk about Homestead Ceiling
Saturday, December 12, 200911:00 a.m. Amherst Cinema, located at 28 Amity St., Amherst. "A Poet in Her Bedroom" is a 32-minute film created by Ernest Urvater and Terry Allen. The film offers insight into the components that made Emily Dickinson such an extraordinary creative force. The film is the first installment in "Angles of a Landscape: Perspectives on Emily Dickinson," a series of films exploring little-known aspects of the poet's life and work. Following the screening, filmmaker Ernie Urvater will lead a discussion. As an introduction to the film, Jane Wald, the Museum's executive director, will share the remarkable story of the parlor ceiling collapse. Wald notes, "Since the poet's bedroom is currently off view, the film showing is an ideal way to honor Emily Dickinson and the space we most associate with her." The screening is free to ACAC members and $3 for the general public. The DVD of "A Poet in Her Bedroom" is available at the Emily Dickinson On- Line Gift Shop and at the Museum's Tour Center.

An Update on the Homestead Ceiling An investigation into the cause of the fallen ceiling names the immediate cause as a fastening system of boards and nails that was insufficient to support the weight of the metal lathe and Portland cement ceiling installed in the early twentieth century. There were no injuries in the incident, and damage to artifacts was surprisingly limited. The Museum is open for tours and shopping, but the Homestead will be closed until inspections and repairs are completed. For more about the incident see the Message from the Executive Director on the Museum's website.
