Dear Emily Dickinson's Poetry 101 Participants

I want to thank you for taking part in our recent Emily Dickinson's Poetry 101 series at the Jones Library.

Those of us from the Emily Dickinson Museum and the Jones Library who planned the series were thrilled at the level of interest and enthusiasm you displayed throughout the four sessions.

We hope that you maintain that interest and enthusiasm as you venture forth. To insure that you do, we want to alert you of two upcoming opportunities to share in Dickinson's story.

Thanks,

Cindy

Emily Dickinson Museum

Join us for a picnic with poetry to wrap up the Museum's Big Read programs! The Big Read: The Poetry of Emily Dickinson is part of a pilot initiative created by the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Poetry Foundation to celebrate great American poets and the nation's historic poetry locales.

We are in need of volunteers to help us read a selection of our visitors' favorite poems. The reading will begin at 1 p.m. If you would like to read, please contact me at csdickinson@emilydickinsonmuseum.org or 413-542-8429.

Bring your own picnic along with a blanket or chair, and join us on the lawn. Beverages will be available at a nominal charge. Craft activity suitable for all ages will also be offered.

Emily Dickinson Museum

The Emily Dickinson Museum will present its annual Creatures of Bliss and Mystery: 19th-Century Circus featuring folksinger and storyteller Tim Van Egmond. The event is free and open to the public.

The on-going schedule will include tightrope walking, ring-toss, parade flag, hat making and Strawberry Shortcake courtesy of Whole Foods Market in Hadley. The traditional Carlo dog parade in memory of Emily's much beloved Newfoundland will also be presented.

In addition to the scheduled events, the museum will offer a special tour, titled "Home Talk," at The Evergreens throughout the afternoon. "Home Talk" enables visitors to learn about the lives and events of the Austin and Susan Dickinson family in their own words and in their own home.

We are in need of volunteers to help staff the circus. Duties include supervising the tightrope walking (not a real tightrope!) and ring toss, greeting visitors, and helping with crafts. If you are interested in helping, please contact Nan Fischlein, program coordinator, at nfischlein@emilydickinsonmuseum.org or 413-542-2034.

Help Support the Emily Dickinson Museum

The poet's writing desk The Emily Dickinson Museum offers an unparalleled glimpse into the life of one of the world's greatest poets. The Homestead is a National Historic Landmark, and the Emily Dickinson Museum has recently been designated an American Literary Landmark by the National Endowment for the Arts. The museum has grown dramatically in its programs, audience, and impact in the five years since its creation in 2003, and attracts worldwide attention.

It owes its success in large measure to the generous encouragement of its many dedicated friends and supporters who have seen the rampant possibilities in the Emily Dickinson Museum.

Our fiscal year ends June 30. We need your help to close the year in a healthy financial condition so that we can continue to maintain the tours, programs, and connection with the poet's world such as those you see in these Emily E-Updates. Find out more about how you can assist the Museum by clicking on the link below, or by contacting executive director Jane Wald. Please send your contribution to: Emily Dickinson Museum Annual Fund, 280 Main Street, Amherst MA 01002.
