Greetings!

Happy New Year from the Emily Dickinson Museum! If you’re reading this, you’re enjoying the Museum’s very first e-update – one of our New Year’s resolutions to you. Your e-mail address has been included because you have either made a gift to the Museum in the past or have shown interest in being kept informed of literary happenings surrounding the poet and her home.

You’ll continue to receive e-updates from the Emily Dickinson Museum during months when we do not send out our 12-page newsletter by postal mail. We know that receiving unwanted e-mails is a nuisance, so if you would like to opt out of receiving these mailings, there’s a way for you to do so at the bottom of this message. Of course, we hope you’ll enjoy receiving these electronic tidbits and continue to keep in touch with us here at the Emily Dickinson Museum. Stop by and see us soon.

February 8 "The Angle of a Landscape" Poetry Reading

Poets Lesle Lewis and Nancy Willard entertain poetry enthusiasts at 7:30 p.m. at the University Gallery at the University of Massachusetts Fine Arts Center. Fantastical photographs of contemporary landscapes from the Gallery’s The Impossible Landscape exhibit meet the written word at this free evening event.

February 11 Kinsmen of the Shelf Discussion Group

Dust off your Dickens because the Emily Dickinson Museum’s book group is delving into another of Dickinson’s favorite reads on Sunday, February 11 at 2 p.m. Since one meeting couldn’t possibly do Charles Dickens justice, this is the first of a two-part discussion on the British writer. Dr. Suzanne Daly of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst will lead the discussion on The Old Curiosity Shop. Kinsmen of the Shelf is a book club with a twist – each month the group focuses on books, poetry or essays read by the Dickinson family. To register, please call 413-542- 2034.

March 3 Museum Opens for the Season

Winter may not be behind us, but at the Emily Dickinson Museum we’re saying hello to spring! The Museum resumes Wednesday and Saturday operating hours of 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 3. Hours extend in April. For a complete operating schedule, click here.

March 28 "Wider than the Sky": The Healing Power of Emily Dickinson

The world over, readers have turned to Dickinson’s poetry during times of grief or loss and found comfort and healing. Editors Cindy MacKenzie and Barbara Dana explore essays and meditations on the healing power of Emily Dickinson in their forthcoming book by the same name. At 7 p.m. on March 28 at the Homestead, MacKenzie and Dana will read excerpts from their book and share selected poems that helped them get through hard times. Audience members are invited to participate in the discussion. No charge but reserve your seat by e-mailing Nan Fischlein.

The Emily Dickinson Museum: The Homestead and The Evergreens is dedicated to educating diverse audiences about the poet's life, family, creative work, times, and enduring relevance, and to preserving and interpreting the Homestead and The Evergreens as historical resources for the benefit of scholars and the general public. The Emily Dickinson Museum is owned by the Trustees of Amherst College and has its own Board of Governors, which is charged with the responsibility of raising the Museum’s operating and capital funds.
