November is Adoption Awareness Month

biracial family
As of March 31, 2008, there were approximately 9,200 children in care who could be adopted in Ontario. Of them:

12 per cent were children aged 0 to 5
32 per cent were children aged 6 to 12
56 per cent were teenagers 13 years and over

Last year, The Children's Aid Society finalized over 55 adoptions; but there are many more children and youth who can still be adopted. Ontario's Children's Aid Societies provide adoptive parents and children with ongoing support, training and education. Financial supports and subsidies may also be available to adoptive parents to help them meet the needs of their adopted children.

Revised In Home Support Program

family support imageThe Society is pleased to inform you or our revised Family Support Program. Family Support is a child protection driver service which provides short term in-home family based services designed to facilitate parents in meeting the best interests of children in their own home. The primary objective of the program is to reduce risk, enhance family functioning, build parental competency and skills and accessing relevant communiy resources. Referrals considered appropriate to the program would include: reunification of children with their families and parenting skills teaching when the risk of out of home placement is significant.
Following a referral from Child Protection Services, and once accepted into the program, a Family Support worker attends the family home a minimum of twice a week for period ranging from one month to a maximum of three months. In collaboration with Child Protection Services, Family Support workers utilize strength-based approaches to engage the families.
2008 Holiday Gift Program
  holiday gift program
The holiday season is fast approaching and annual Holiday Gift Program is well under way. This year our Program will be a team effort, coordinated by both The Children's Aid Society of Ottawa and our Foundation, Champions For Children. Each holiday season, our generous donors, volunteers, staff members and local businesses work together to make the holiday season brighter for many families, children and youth struggling in the Ottawa area.
That is the real magic of the holiday season! Thanks to the community's generosity, the Holiday Gift Program provided over 8000 gifts to children and youth and 48 families were sponsored during the 2007 holiday season. We anticipate the need for gifts for our children and youth will be high again this year. The generosity of community donors brings much joy to children, youth and families who are receiving service from the Society. For more information on how you can donate, please contact Renee Campbell at (613) 747-7800 ext. 2747 or Suzanne Desjardins at 613-747-7800 ext. 2805.
World Trivia Night

world trivia night logoOn Friday November 21st, the Champions For Children Foundation held its 14th annual World Trivia Night. Over 2200 trivia buffs and fun-seekers were in attendance - a SOLD OUT event! Teams of 10 enjoyed a night of food, trivia and camaraderie as they answered questions and competed for the coveted World Trivia Night Trophy! This event raised over $60,000 for our Foundation - and great prizes were awarded for the most pledges raised for the charity (WooHoo Riverside Pub - $6K+), the best costumes (Yee ha! Angus McCrock Team!) and the highest score (HOO RAH! - La Triviata). We are thrilled that this event was so successful - as funds raised support education, enrichment and prevention programs of the CAS.
We look forward to seeing everyone next year in November to help us celebrate our 15th anniversary.
