October is Child Abuse Prevention Month
October is Child Abuse Prevention Month in Ontario.
The Children's Aid Society of Ottawa will be holding its ninth annual awareness
campaign.
The campaign is called Use Your Voice and aims to promote the importance of
everyone's role in preventing child abuse and neglect and helping families in
Ottawa break the cycle of abuse.
The campaign is held every year in many communities across Ontario during the
month of October. This year, the CAS of
Ottawa hopes to distribute up to 20,000 purple buttons and wristbands
throughout the community during October.
The City of Ottawa will be declaring Friday, October 3, 2008 as Child
Abuse & Neglect Prevention Day.
This year's campaign theme is "children shouldn't have to live with
abuse." We urge you to speak to
friends, family, neighbors, colleagues and associates about our Use Your Voice
campaign. For more information on the
campaign or to download the posters visit www.casott.on.ca.

Parenting Information Session - Partnership with Immigrant Women's Services
The Children's Aid Society of Ottawa and Immigrant Women's Services are partnering in a new initiative meant to address 'parenting in Canada' with immigrant women. A information session model is currently being developed and will be implemented in the following weeks. This is an exciting initiative, which aims to address current fears and misconceptions regarding CAS services, to discuss the challenges of parenting in a new environment, and to allow for an interaction question period. |

Would the Ottawa Community Report Child Abuse? Survey says...
In recent years, the Society has invested an increasing amount of resources and funds towards developing and implementing various Public Education initiatives. As such, it is important to establish a baseline of public awareness against which the reach and success of campaigns and initiatives can be measured. In the month of March, the Society engaged the services of Ipsos Reid to complete a twelve-minute telephone survey with 1,000 random Ottawa residents. The results of the survey were very encouraging and the highlights are as follows: A very large majority of Ottawa residents are aware of the C.A.S. and a solid majority, though a smaller one, are familiar with the organization. Those who are aware of and familiar with the organization have a favourable opinion of it; in fact favourability and familiarity are linked. The findings of the research point to a few groups that might especially benefit from being made more aware of the C.A.S. and its activities.
- Immigrants, visible minorities and those whose ethnicity is other than English or French are somewhat less likely to agree that the C.A.S. plays an important role in the community. Immigrants are less aware of the organization's role with regard to foster care and more likely to feel that the C.A.S. removes children from their homes unnecessarily. Immigrants, visible minorities, and those whose ethnicity is other than English or French are less likely to strongly agree that they would report abuse
- Younger residents of Ottawa (18-34) are another potential group of interest. They too are less aware of or familiar with the C.A.S. They are less likely to strongly agree that they would know how to go about reporting child abuse.
Although a majority of the respondents say that they would report child abuse, only a little over 40% would know how to report directly to the CAS. The information acquired from the survey results will be used in the development of a new 3-year Communications Strategic Plan.
