Inuit, First Nation, Métis Partnership Celebration and Tool Kit Launch

This event was held on March 28, as a celebration of the growing partnership between CASO (The Children's Aid Society of Ottawa) and the Aboriginal-Inuit front line community-based service providers of Ottawa.  In addition to traditional opening ceremonies by Inuit, Métis and First Nations elders, there was also traditional food, an Aboriginal youth art exhibit, crafts and kiosks for the seven Aboriginal-Inuit community-based service partner agencies.  Also, an "Information and Referral Tool", which outlines front line services available for Inuit, Métis and First Nations peoples at each of the different ages and stages of the lifecycle, was launched for agency staff. The seven partner agencies are:

Minwaashin Lodge/Aboriginal Women's Support Centre and Oshki Kizis Lodge

Odawa Friendship Centre

Tungasuvvingat Inuit

Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health

Makonsag Head Start

Ottawa Inuit Children's Centre

Tewegan

Alternate Dispute Resolution

The Children's Aid Society of Ottawa has developed an Integrated Conflict Management System Framework which offers a range of Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) options for children, youth and families involved with the Society. As part of this initiative, the Society has worked with community partners to identify professionals who can deliver Mediation and Family Group Conferencing services to those involved with child welfare.

The Society has worked with other Ontario child welfare agencies to provide specialized training for these professionals. As of April 1, 2008, Family Services à la famille Ottawa will be taking on the role of managing the administrative, funding and reporting functions related to these prescribed ADR activities within the Region.

The Society is also working with our Aboriginal-Inuit community-based service partners to develop a Culture-Based ADR approach that will respond to the needs of the Inuit, Métis and First Nation communities.

Additionally, the Society is developing a training currriculum for staff to integrate ADR principles into their clinical practices. Providing a range of ADR options will enhance successful resolution of child welfare issues for children, youth and families.
