Foster a Snow Angel on Parliament Hill
On the first ever 'Ontario Family Day' held on February 18th , 2008, families of all kinds are invited to come and make colourful snow angels on Parliament Hill from 11am to 2pm. Each snow angel will represent a child or youth in the care of a Children's Aid Society in eastern Ontario who is waiting for a family.
On any given day, there are over 3,200 children and youth in care in Eastern Ontario. When it is necessary for these children to come into care, they need families to help, understand and care for them. Whether it be for a short period of time or for a lifetime, connecting with a family provides life changing experiences and outcomes.
Through this fun and emotionally charged event, it is our hope that more people come to understand the importance of families in our communities. The safety and well-being of children and youth is everyone's responsibility.

The violence against women sector (VAW) of Ottawa, with Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre as the lead agency has partnered with CAS to offer an integrated service delivery model for mothers and their children who have been referred to the Society because woman abuse is occurring in the home.
The Integrated Services Project model includes two VAW Counsellors who work with Child Protection Workers on a designated VAW Team, to respond to the crisis, safety, emotional and other needs of women and their children. They are supervised by a VAW Supervisor who is also onsite and available to provide consultation to the Child Protection team.
This 2 year pilot project is in it's early stages, however, we are pleased to share that since July 2007, VAW Counsellors have provided services to 62 families involved with the Society. |

Parenting Stop! Collaborative Program
A partnership between the CAS and Pinecrest -Queensway Health and Community Services (Children's Services) has resulted in the creation of Parent Stop!, a project that is reaching out to low income, isolated, and newcomer parents with parenting information they can access on their own, or with support.
This innovative program, funded by the Children's Aid Society Community Capacity Building Project, allows for dedicated computers loaded with parenting program information called Parenting Wisely to be placed in several west end Ottawa locations: at a family shelter, in a Headstart Nursery School, in an Ontario Early Years Centre, and in four Community Houses located in low income housing neighbourhoods. Each Parent Stop! computer offers headphones for privacy, and parents may choose from one of two programs: one for parents of children ages 3 - 12, and the other for parents of teens. There is additional support offered to parents in the way of short term childcare, snacks, conversation/coaching or transportation, depending on the needs of the parents.
The project has just launched its first five sites, and three more will open shortly. The second stage of the project will be a wider community information campaign to inform agencies working with families, schools, etc of these sites and encourage them to refer parents. |
