Goodluck "Lucky" Maro is an amazing young man.
Coming from a very poor, one-parent family who lived with relatives because they had no home of their own, Lucky had to struggle daily to stay in primary and secondary school. He was often sent home because he didn't have the proper uniform or shoes. He borrowed books from other students to read at night by kerosene lamp because he couldn't afford his own. He remembers, "I just said to myself over and over, 'Don't give up hope!" Because, even if you have nothing, you must always have hope."
There were a lot of things that Lucky didn't have, but what he did have was hope and a dream. He had decided that he was going to be a doctor. And, he was not going to let anything stop him. With a government loan, eating one small meal a day and with books and clothes shared by friends, he was able to stick it out for awhile. However, the cost of medical school proved to be too much and he was just about to be dismissed for lack of payment when another of our medical students introduced us to him.
Through the generosity of G4TZ sponsors, Lucky was able to finish his last two years of medical school with very high marks as well as with the food, books and clothes he needed to become one of the top students in his class. He graduated with his M.D. on November 13, 2010.
Lucky is an exceptional young man, but he is not an exception to the deep desire and persistent hope that our G4TZ students have to obtain an education. All of our students recognize that education is the only real chance they have to better themselves and to have an opportunity to improve their country.
We congratulate Lucky on his graduation and we are thankful we could play a role in helping him to achieve his dream.
